There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

A Discussion on the Reliability of Hunting Records
Posted by: tigerluver - 11-04-2015, 11:27 PM - Forum: Debate and Discussion about Wild Animals - Replies (17)
Hunting records have been regarded controversially since the dawn of the "scientific" era. Many doubt whether a sport whereby larger game is desired can produce accurate figures.

At the same time, the "scientific era" has failed to provide morphological information on many species, such as tigers, lions, bears, elephants, and bovids, in an amount as great as records of past hunters.

It leaves us with the difficult question on whether or not to accept hunting records. To best answer this question, this thread is for the discussion of different hunting records of any species. You are welcome to discuss specific records as well as general ideas regarding this topic.

Size of Okavango Delta Lions and Lionesses
Posted by: Sully - 11-04-2015, 04:47 AM - Forum: Lion - Replies (40)
I've heard a bit of the exceptional size of Okavango Lions and lionesses and that they are some of the biggest cats in the world. This is due to big prey in buffalo and it being hard to move around in the marshes strengthening the animals when they do. Maybe as they're more aquatic this may strengthen them too. I've even heard the lionesses are nearly the same size as the mainland males! We all know about the Duba's as well.

If anyone has more info or data on these cats then please share, all data is welcome. Share pics and vids too please.

Fragmented info on this bear. “Dr. Pete Clark took this exceptional bear while hunting with me last fall. Certainly over 11 ft. in his prime, but still well over 10 feet, Boone & Crockett 29 12/16ths. Fellow guide Troy Kitchel captured it on video. Killing shot was at 4 yards!”

The most powerful predator teeth of all time?
Posted by: GrizzlyClaws - 10-27-2015, 12:48 PM - Forum: Questions - Replies (10)
Livyatan Melville: The largest recorded individual tooth measures up to 14 inches (35 cm), while the rumor suggests some even larger tooth up to 16 inches (40 cm).

I don't have the weight of the largest tooth, but consider that a 7.5 inches (19 cm) modern sperm whale tooth can weigh up to 700 grams (1.5 pounds), it is likely that the largest Leviathan tooth can weigh over 10 pounds.

Here is a monster tooth of the Leviathan.

Tyrannosaurus Rex: The longest recorded tooth measures up to 13.75 inches, although the weight is unknown for that tooth. But a 5 inches fragment already weighs up to 337.8 grams, so an entire tooth can weigh over 900 grams (2 pounds).

Here is the replica of the largest recorded T. rex tooth.

Megalodon: There are many pics of the exaggerated fake Meg teeth being found online, but when it comes to the real teeth, a 169 mm tooth based on the slant height weighs up to 538 grams, and I guess the largest one should weigh over 600 grams.
