There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

What is the oldest age known of lions that formed a coalition?
Posted by: Mhayise - 01-12-2018, 01:52 AM - Forum: Questions - Replies (2)
What is the oldest age known where unrelated lion kings formed a coalition? How did it happen? I always thought lions are either born in the same pride and then become lifetime brothers or sworn enemies but I've recently learnt they do form coalitions with strangers

  The tiger's "sideburns"
Posted by: Saiya - 01-06-2018, 09:09 AM - Forum: Questions - Replies (1)
Is it known why tigers have evolved their distinctive bushy sideburns (for lack of better term) of fur on the sides of the face and what purpose they serve? It appears most developed in the Sumatran subspecies and least so in tigresses of the Bengal and Indochinese. Have tigresses been shown to be more drawn to males with fluffier sideburns in the way lionesses are to male lions with bigger and darker manes?

  Happy New Year 2018!
Posted by: Polar - 01-01-2018, 02:11 AM - Forum: Miscellaneous - Replies (7)
Happy New Year, WildFact family!

Hopefully it isn't too late for some of you in other areas of the globe, but it is currently about 4 PM right here in Virginia. Have 7-8 more hours of goofing around until my resolutions for next year start.

What are all your plans for tonight (if 2017 hasn't already passed)? I will attend a few parties and hopefully see the ball down in New York City to commence the year 2018!

Have fun! :)

Smile Sundarban Mini-trip

I'm off to Sundarban Tiger Reserve tomorrow morning, for a very short tour. I'll be back on 26th evening.

Southern Bengal have witnessed a long mid-winter depression for the past few days. Weather cleared today morning itself.. Thus, i'm expecting to see basking saltwater crocodiles at the least.

Will post detailed photos & videos whenever i have access to the internet.

Wish me luck!!

What are the testosterone levels of varying animals?
Posted by: Polar - 12-22-2017, 09:12 AM - Forum: Questions - Replies (20)
I am done with my finals!

Same as stated above, I wanted to discuss this because PT Sondaica and I were chatting about the varying testosterone levels of different animals, especially carnivorous mammals (lions, bears, tigers) and a few herbivores (horses, rhinos, elephants, to name a few).

Have any of you, especially @GrizzlyClaws, @peter, @tigerluver, or @sanjay have any information on the testosterone levels of varying species?

I will try to post some of my own evidence/supporting arguments (few posts and articles) here to supplement the question.

Why do jaguars bite the skull of the prey?
Posted by: parvez - 12-14-2017, 09:53 AM - Forum: Questions - Replies (25)
I have been wondering why jaguars bite the skull of their prey which is obviously tougher than relatively easy bite to the neck. One reason I can find is horns. The jaguar region prey doesn't have horns. So it is easier to bite the head of the prey. But there is the cougar that bites the neck that is in the same regions as jaguar. My another guess is over the course of evolution in American continents, they have learned biting the skull probably makes the prey immotile and hence it is easier choice to bite the head of the prey. I want to hear opinions of forum members on this. Please give your opinions.

For a while now i have been intending to create this one, a thread dedicated to sharing knowledge on wilderness landscapes , habitats & ecosystems.

By definition however, "Wildscape" means:
Habitat restoration and conservation for rural and urban areas. It enables you to contribute to wildlife conservation by developing wildlife habitats where they live, work and play.
