I think its just a risk reward gamble for each individual lion. And nothing to do with the bonds or strategies within the coalition

Sure you can stay with your brothers for safety. But that means that you have to compete with them for food and sex. While if you take some risk and alone time and seek out the other parts of the pride. You can have it all for yourself.

But the drawback is that if you are caught alone. You may not make it to your brothers in time. But the chances of that happening are slim.

So it seems that two of the young Nkuhuma lionesses are heavily pregnant. Guess Dark Mane got the job done in January! It's fitting for a male, who has had to deal with so much over the past two years, to eventually be the father of a good number of the Avoca cubs.

I hope DM's instincts tell him to go west and protect the Nkuhumas if his brothers go south. It would be a tragedy if these young lionesses are completely abandoned. Plus, the Talamatis don't really need him at this point.

One of the NK boys (wildrearth- today's drive):

The Ottawa Male lion tries to relax after a large buffalo kill, but these buffalo are not leaving the area anytime soon, seconds after this picture the whole pride was dispersed and ran away in response to the onslaught! But the buffalo's efforts were futile as the kill had already been made.
