Lions of Sabi Sands

"Sometimes the shift in male lion dynamics explodes overnight and sometimes it's a long simmer before things reach boiling point. At the moment a few coalitions have been dancing around each other, vocalising constantly, but nothing significant has taken place. Yet.

We didn't get to see it, but the WE guide mentioned that last night at around 9pm the Plains Camp Males had an encounter with the Nkuhuma Pride. Not sure what happened but by sunrise the Nkuhumas and Plains camp males were both gone, and Dark Mane was back on Djuma alone.

Othawa pride, Othawa subs, Tumbela males and Othawa male. Scar Tumbela look like he has improved his condition.

With the 2 Plains camp males, 2 Kruger males, 3 Avoca males (Blondie and Mohawk together seen often) and Dark-maned seen there too, and the Imbali male. It is not only the Ntsevu pride that continue to provide interesting dynamics. With three young coalitions being seen on and off throughout the reserve, roars all around are heard in the early mornings, which is exactly what led us to this young male. Plains Camp (and in all honesty Nk + Styx) boys have a long way to go. Yesterday 3-4 lionesses gave them a good beating and sent them fleeing south. A dominant male can usually steal a kill from a pride without a problem. So just shows... these boys definitely need more time.

Plains Camp Males are younger then NK/Styx, they are not even 4 yet (prob born from mid to late 2017). SO the Plains Camp males got beating in that altercation with Nkuchuma pride?
On drive today Tristan shared the story (almost towards the end). I guess someone was driving home and saw the interaction between the PC males and females. They came close to the pride and the lionesses (obviously protective of their cubs) beat them up and sent them away. I'm not sure where DM fits into this but he's sitting in the same spot with a decent sized belly today, but I think it was the girls who did the chasing.

And obiviously PC males had no reason to fight if Nkuhumas didn't have a kill, they prob just bump into each others.. If Nkuhumas had the kill, PC males might not retreat that easly without dominant males around..
I think by the time the PC boys arrived there was no more kill, the Nkhumas caught a Impala ram and turned it into nothing pretty quickly. That was at 7pm.

Yeah there would only have been scraps of the kill at that point. I guess there's a lot of excitement around new young males but, at least for me personally, I don't see them being a huge threat anytime soon. And 4 isn't that young. I'm sure many of our current dominant males were roaring and challenging for territory at that age (of course getting beat too and chased around). |
