Wounded Kankazari Male

At a very first instance, it seemed that the massive big cat tank is heading to quench his thirst after his meal as blood stains were visible on his nose and that's why he is in a hurry. But when I zoomed the image after capturing it was wounds on the face.

The Emperor of Pench.

The tiger stories of Pench revolve around a handful of tigers and it is impertinent to not talk about the history of tigers from Pench.

The great matriarch of Pench was Badi Maa (or the elderly mother) who with the Charger of Pench, gave Pench the legendary tigers - Kalapahad (the highest peak of Pench MP) male from first litter (1999) and BaghinNala and Collarwali from second litter (2005).
Kalapahad male was also known as Charger because of his aggression towards tourist vehicles and elephants. He went on to become the father of the third litter of Badi Maa, his own mother (2008). Kalapahad was later challenged and outcast by a tiger of unknown ancestry (and probably from the Maharastra side of Pench) that goes by the name BMW, who went on to father the subsequent litters of Badi Maa (2010 and 2012).
The Kalapahad male (also known as T2, and collared later) mated with Collarwali (his sister from previous litter) in May 2008. The cubs soon died of pneumonia not withstanding the harsh monsoons. She littered again in October 2008. At this time, a new male from Raiyyakassa area (and hence his name), was expanding his territory and proving to be an imminent danger for Collarwali's cubs.
Collarwali (T-15) wasn't seen for many days, leaving the very young cubs to fend for themselves. It was then noted that she was distracting the new male, Raiyyakassa (T-30) and saving her cubs; something that her mother too did, to save her cubs (sired by Kalapahad male).
Collarwali then went on to give birth to subsequent litters from the doting father, Raiyyakassa male, who is the emperor of Pench now.
Raiyyakassa's origins were unknown too, and he too was shy of the tourists and charged at them (though he mellowed with age). He ousted the prime male, Kalapahad, and has been a long time rival of BMW. He pushed BMW to the corner of the park, and enjoyed the vast expanses of Pench for his own self.
As of today, another big tiger known as Tarzan has just scratched the edges of Raiyyakassa's territory. Raiyyakassa who owns the biggest territory of any tiger from Pench MP, and has many females including Collarwali, Langdi (Badi Maa's another litter) and other tigresses, is the undisputed emperor of Pench.

The King is back in his Kingdom. Umarpani male is one of the biggest Tigers in India currently. The sheer head size and the neck girth proves that he is in a separate class altogether. What is really good is that his strong genes have been passed on which is good for Kanha.

What is really incredible about Kanha is the background sound that accompanies when a Tiger walks. Almost all the prey animals announce the arrival of the King. Infact you also get to hear the roar of Umarpani though very briefly in this video when he reaches the Sondhar water hole. The  peacocks, spotted deers, and many other birds make the whole arrival very dramatic and pulsating. No amount of words can describe a feeling of seeing a Tiger in person.

Umarpani male is son of Munna (legendary Tiger, who has CAT written on his forehead), and his mother is Umarpani female. Having genes of very strong Tigers he is not a surprise for his size. Currently a dominant male in Mukki zone. He has had tough competition over the years, but he has successfully retained his territory, and there doesn't seem to be any other Tiger taking his place in the near future.

Hope he carries on the legacy of strong and big Tigers of Kanha for long.

Quite the Scrap.

Speaking of fights, here is the suspected male who is thought to have recently gotten into a fight with the Rayakassa male in Pench.
Aditya Shah
This anxious new male tiger - Bhagoda , seen after almost 2 years, was sighted cautiously approaching the water , where he sat for about 10 mins and left. This was deep in Rayakassa's territory, possibly a prelude to what may/already has been a territorial challenge .

Pench National Park | May 2018

He doesn't show any marks from a fight and Rayakassa is said to have a large gash on his nose at the moment, so we'll have to wait and get a little more info before we can come to any conclusions.

My friend just saw the Rayakassa male and he is definitely wounded and limping.

In regards to size, he said the Rayakassa male is a little smaller than Mangu of Bandhavgarh.
He'll have a few photos posted soon.
