Mr. Grumpy Bajrang! This guy just hated to see the green beast around. Came out grumpy and was growling at us when he crossed the track. We were the only Gypsy around and there were tigers all around us (Sonam and family). Amazing sighting. Low light, TATR Apr'18.

That's my Jaw!

How wide a tiger can open his mouth, I really got amazed when Yuvraj aka dhamngaon male yawned with opening his jaw to fullest! And if you are required to break the neck of full grown sambhar or bison then you need to have jaw being opened to this extent & have most powerful canines which can tear the thick flesh layers on neck of the prey!

He's looking really skinny, I saw him in May and he still had some good mass but now he's looking like skin and bone.
Must be a really tough summer there, between him and CM both looking like shells at the moment.

CM has never been known to be a big male during the summer, atleast from what i have seen of him the last three summer seasons. It looks like he bulks up post monsoon and winters. I noticed the same with Jai, his weight fluctuated heavily during post monsoon and he was fairly decent in the summer and the heaviest in winter. if you look at Tadoba, Matkasur and Khali seem robust this summer season. Bajrang is fairly decent, Dewada male and Kankajhari fluctuated quite a bit. It’s interesting how odd Sangam looks this season, almost reminds me of a beat up Bheema after his fight with Umarpani male.

Especially because when I saw him it was mid May, only a month prior to this time last year and he was in great shape.

I hadn't really been to familiar with him prior to that so I haven't paid much attention to him during the summer months, but this seems extreme, he looks like a different cat but CM definitely goes through the same extreme fluctuations as well.

A territorial fight was averted when MV 2, surrendered to the almighty Umarpani male today morning in Kanha. MV 2 a sub-adult, and no match for Umarpani was intelligent to give in and sit when Umarpani approached. There are some signs that Tigers show when they submit and this was one. At times they also lie down on their back to save themselves. It is a sign of surrender and self security as well. Umarpani is also smart not to unnecessarily waste his energy on a Tiger which is no competition to him yet and not for another couple of years atleast. The size of Umarpani male in peak heat needs no certification to the fact that he is in a league of his own.

The world of Tigers is very exciting for the viewers but for Tigers it is full of hardship.  Video by Sanjay Thakre.

Solid picture of Waghdoh, what a legend. no sighting of him this year. heard he’s around the buffer boundaries in a non tourism area. In his prime, he was easily one of the biggest male of Central India and perhaps one of the most successful tiger in the entire region and country wide. he sired over 30 cubs with 6 females. three of his kids can still be traced. Lara (female) in Junona buffer, Sonam (female) in Moharli and Teliya, Jharni (female) in Alijanja buffer. Wagdoh’s grand kids can be found in every corner of Tadoba, from the core to every possible area in the buffer. I hope he’s safe out there. Tfs !

Male Tiger Chota-Munna, Female Tigress Dhwajahandi and their three 10 month old Cubs. Rare to see such a tight family unit.

This Male is especially loving and caring...on another occasion, we saw Chota-Munna bringing the 3 Cubs to the Baba-Thenga water body on his own and playing with them, while the mother (Dhwajahandi Female) joined the party after about 45 minutes.

We were blessed to see the most famous family in Tadoba beating the scorching summer heat by relaxing in Pandharpauni lake...

The cubs were in a playful mood with Maya and Matkasur keeping a close watch

Here is some great info and blogs below

Continuing our story on the Mighty Males of Indian forest we present two actors who still rule their respective areas- Fateh (T42) from Ranthambore and Bajrang (T49) from Tadoba.

For a change , we do not want to write long stories about these majestic rulers but would leave you with some facts , pictures and video links to see, feel and understand about them.

Fateh

Fateh is named after the famous Fateh Singh Ranthore , the great tiger conservationist who revived Ranthambore during the early years of Project Tiger. Fateh’s greatness also lies in the fact that he inherited the genes of Machli (do I need to tell you who she is)- born to  Jail Kho female (T30) and the famous Jhumroo (son of Machli) . After he separated from the mother, he found his way to Kuwalji – the southernmost tip of the Ranthambhore Tiger reserve. Here he challenged and killed the resident elder male T36 (first signs of aggression). He mated probably with T37 but lost his partner shortly.

Fateh is infamous for charging vehicles – something that Charger did in Bandhavgarh. Don’t believe us – please see the video here posted by tourists on Youtube. You can hear the screams !!

Luckily when we saw Fateh, he had mellowed down to some extent (though people have seen him hunting down cows near villages). He was sleeping and then he got up . His yawns revealed those canines to send shivers down our spines -don’t know why but everytime we see a tiger opening his mouth that is bound to happen
*This image is copyright of its original author
..after spending hours (we were with him for more than 2 hours at stretch ) relaxing under the shade, the handsome Fateh disappeared in the bushes to meet his partner (we heard calls from a tigress as the guide informed us). Mating session was missed but seeing an aggressive male so close and that too for two hours would definitely qualify as one of the memorable sightings we have had in the Indian forests so far!!

Picture: Suddhasattwa Das

Bajrang

Ever wondered what can be the size of a full grown tiger? Well you may see the video here as he emerges from the grasslands near Telia lake in Tadoba.

Video credit : Suddhasattwa Das

So what do you think? It is huge right ? We were overwhelmed by his gait when we saw him cross the road . He glanced once at us -that look said it all

That’s Bajrang for you -the hulk from Tadoba.

Bajrang has carried on the legacy of great male tigers of Tadoba- Wagdoh , Gabbar, Yeda Anna in terms of valour and dominance. In fact we feel he has surpassed them when we know that he commands 8 tigresses at present starting with great Telia sister Sonam!!!! * Has any tiger commanded such a large area so many tigresses under him? Probably not.

Thanks to him, Tadoba is well poised to see the new generation of tigers coming up safe and healthy -Jai Bajrang Bali !!!!
-Suddhasattwa Das and Niladri Kundu.
