In this amazing picture we can see selati 3 and Selati 1 leaving the scene while another Selati (maybe 2 or 4) remains lying down as if there were no rhinos around.
Selati 1 (most developed mane, behind the other male) | Selati 3 (less developed mane, leading the way) | Either male no.2 or no.4 (lying down)

"Selati 4. He was with Othawa pride on a kudu kill. He mainly stayed with the injured cub very protective of him"; (note by me: the one in the photo is clearly Selati #3)

"Selati #1 with Othawa Pride, that day he was badly limping from an injury in one of the front paw. He surely got it in a fight with the females of the Ximhungwee pride the day one cub was killed";

"Selati #2 staying with Othawa pride. Not a very good picture but you can see his poor condition. He looked really thin";

"Very sweet and protective Selati #3 with an Othawa cub. Although he is "the bad boy" he showed a lot of patience with the cubs";

Selati #2, clearly lost most of his mane at that time...

Selati males, 2013 - by Francois Fourie
Three Selati males, January 4th
"3 of the south males on the move trailing a large herd of buffalo!"
From left to right:

Selati #3 | Selati #1 | Selati #2

"While trailing buffalo this male bolted after a young wharthog, just a cloud of dust as the wharthogs raced of into the distance!"

(it could be either Selati #4: because of his blonde mane and healthy body | or Selati #2: that is present in the photo above and also had a slightly blonde mane, but somewhat darker)

Selati male, January 15th
"Saw all 4 of the brothers call, maybe a challenge set for the coaltion in the east."(clearly a reference to the notorious majingilanes)

Once a magnificent male, Selati #2 is visibly deteriorated in this photo.

lost much of his mane, unfortunately the condition of the former coalition leader would only get worse from there

With all of your posts, I've come to understand that the Selatis were more successful, and much more well documented, than I had previously thought. They sure could catch a lot of buffalo too.

April 2013
Incredible footage of a standoff between all 4 Selatis and a herd of buffalo... (by Francois Gilbert Collin )
"We were following the herd of buffalo and hoping to encounter the Selati Boys that had been tailing the herd for a couple of days.  Suddenly we heard the distress call from a buffalo.  George, the very experienced ranger from Inyati Private Game Lodge put the Land Cruiser into gear and we crashed through the bushes in the direction of the sound. In less than a minute we were looking at a standoff between the 'Selati Male Lion Coalition' and some very upset and disturbed buffaloes."

"The buffalo that had made the distress call was down and kicking.  This was less than five minutes after the initial distress call. The rest of the buffalo started moving closer and getting more and more upset with the lions.  George, our ranger from Inyati Private Game Lodge parked the Land Cruiser in the best location possible so we would have a grandstand view of the unfolding events, a standoff between the 'Selati Male Lion Coalition' and the herd.  With the lions defending their 'kill' and the buffalo wanting to recover a member of the herd."

"The critical moment when the buffalo go in for the strike and the Selati Male Lion Coalition defence formation starts to crumble!"

"After the Selati defence is broken, the skinny one (Selati #2) is left behind holding on desperately to his meal. The buffalo rally for a further rescue attempt and toss him, forcing him to run away.  After the last of the Selati Lions moves off, the buffalo manage to get the wounded buffalo miraculously back onto her feet after having had lions at her throat for over 5 minutes!  We spent some time looking on, and then moved off to attempt to relocate all four of the Selatis, and to see if there were any visible injuries from the encounter."

"Buffalo.... The morning after"

"The skinny Selati (#2) hanging out right next to his meal the morning after"
Selati #2 was the one that was holding on the the buffalo's throat in the kill zone. He also the one that stood fast and did not let go and run until the other buffalo's tossed him off the kill...
Definitely a tough male

This was one year after they killed Mr. T. Selati 2's health deteriorated quickly, having looked good in November 2012, and then by April 2013 he is very thin and sickly looking. My guess would be TB, from his appearance, and sadly that is a very painful and prolonged way to go.

The author of the post mentions the condition of male no.2 in the comments of one of his Facebook posts. He claims he heard different stories...
Selati #2 could have been injured in some territorial fight (Majingilane). Which I particularly doubt, since he never had exposed wounds on any occasion...

Another story mentions that he was kicked in the ribs by a buffalo in some situation... (which could have caused internal injuries). which i believe has a greater chance of being true.

Certainly a possibility, with the sheer number of buffalo those boys brought down, such hunts carry a lot of risks for sure.
