THE SELATI MALES

The 5 Selati brothers were born during the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 in different litters.
They were part of Southern/Selati pride. They are the sons of Golf Course males and grandsons of Rollercoaster males.

The Southern Pride and the younh males in 2009 with the Golf Course males

All 5 Selati males and probably some Southern pride liones(s) in 2010

They became pride males in the Western Sector of the Sabi Sands after killing one of the most notorious lions ever, a member of the ruling Mapogo coalition: Mr T
They ended up chasing the two remaining males away without trouble.

Unfortunately, the youngest of the five males was killed by Majingilane in 2011, before they became pride males.

After the death of the fifth male, the remaining 4 did not receive names, they were only identified by numbers:

In the coalition, 2/4 males had dark manes, they were male #1 and male #3, and were sired, most likely, by the dark-maned male Golf Course male

While the other two had blondie manes, #2 and male #4, most likely sired by the other Golf Course male, the one with the light mane

I will post an individual ID for each male later;

Both males eated carcass infected with TB, and started losing condition, 1 male disappeared shortly after, prob killed by other lion (some say mrT and KT, but no evidence), other become nomad and roamed northern Sabi Sands, where he was known as Arathusa males (if my memory serves) and occasionaly hanged with 2 Nkuhuma males (Sizanani and bro), eventually he also disappeared/died not long after.

Shame, as they where quite young and in their prime.

Selati #1
AKA
Broken Tooth
The oldest and biggest of the 4 brothers
His black mane contributes to his impressive appearance

He was a key player in the fight against Majingilane, surviving outnumbered against his competitors
Showed his aggression in the fight against Mr T and in the killing of one of Mapogo's young sons
Also breaking his tooth more than before after a fight with Cleo, which possibly resulted in the death of young Eyrefield

A great buffalo hunter, often taking the responsibility of suffocating the prey
Even so, he seemed to be peaceful with his brothers.

Selati #2
AKA
RIBS
Eventually the skinniest - Once the most handsome

His mane was once blonde and full, but due to his probably broken ribs by buffalo, he ended up losing condition
At his peak, the second biggest male of the coalition

When he was still alive but already injured, he strengthens his brothers in the fight with the Majingilane
In some situations getting involved in physical fights, however, his greatest collaboration was mostly in the exchange of roars

A great buffalo hunter and just like the first Selati, he would also take the responsibility of suffocating the prey
Said by some to be the most dominant in his prime

*This image is copyright of its original author

*This image is copyright of its original author

Selati #3
AKA
Bent Hip
The darkest maned male - The ladies man
Previously the shorter maned one, he eventually became the most impressive and darker of his brothers
Had a protuberance + hole in his hip, the addition of a long snout made it easy to recognize him

Was essential in the fight against Majingilane
He fought bravely from 2012 to 2014
Having his lips split in half on one occasion
Eventually this bravery cost him his life and he was killed fighting, as it should be

Like the older ones, he was a great hunter, but seemed to be more the one who helps to take down completely instead of suffocating
He was the ladies' man and dominated his brothers when this was the subject

*This image is copyright of its original author

*This image is copyright of its original author

Selati #4
AKA
Ginger Mane
The agressive - The Ginger maned male
Naturally the thinnest in body, he made up for it with his good looks, having a red-looking mane and a wide nose

Once again an essential brother in the fight against Majingilane
Showed his aggression in the fight against Mr T, being the main attacker in the altercation
The most agressive in the killing of one of Mapogo's young sons

Unlike his brothers, he was not very skilled at hunting, sometimes standing aside and watching while his brothers did the hard work
However, he would often challenge his brothers, sometimes dominating them on carcasses and fighting for mating rights

WHO IS THE KING OF BEASTS? - February 27, 2013 (volovecto)
"Who reigns supreme in the jungle or, in this case, the Savanna Game Reserve?"

"We were the third group to come upon three large male lions napping in the afternoon, and it turns out we were in the right place at the right time. A fourth kingly male lion was sleeping alone, not faraway from the trio in tall grasses.  We drove over to  him when we saw the lone lion raise his head. Any activity on the  part of a male big cat is a photographic opportunity not to be missed."

Fourth male, Selati #1

*This image is copyright of its original author

"While those photos were being taken, we noticed a large bull elephant striding through the tall grasses with a land rover full of guests in careful pursuit"

[...]

"The elephant made a beeline for the solitary lion but ran past him when he noticed the three other brother lions being lazy and napping without so much as a stir. Then, in what we all believe was a premeditated act, the bull pivoted after running  behind the same tree that was providing shade for the nonchalant brother cats. The riled up pachyderm defiantly shook the tree with his trunk"

*This image is copyright of its original author

"The violent shaking scared at least half dozen lives out of the supposedly Kings of the bush.  The male lions leaped out of their sleep and took off at a frenzied pace right past us and were quickly out of sight.  We couldn’t find them the rest of the afternoon."

All 4 Selatis on patrol at Singita, 2012 - Greg Baker IG

Unlike most lion coalitions, the four brothers spent more time apart from their prides. Patrolling, keeping the edges of the territory safe. In this process they followed the herds of buffalo and constantly killed one or more individuals in their hunting.
Once upon a time the four Selatis are all healthy and the undisputed kings of the western Sabi Sand...
Far behind #4, then #3, #1 and #2 leading his brothers

Selati #2, in good condition

Real shame things played out like they did, these boys could have done some big things. Seems the deck was always stacked against them. I appreciate your updates, they show us a lot that we hadn't seen, and show us that they weren't just a flash in the pan. Some serious bad luck, to have their time in the bush sandwiched between two of the most famous, and aggressive, coalitions of all time. Seems they were a really tight group, for being a large coalition.

Here we go again:
The core of hunters in the coalition doing what they did best... Hunting - March 2012

#1 aka Broken Tooth on top of the buffalo and #3 aka Bent Hip holding on to the back of its prey

Male #2 aka Ribs make his appearence and seems to be looking for an opportunity to also grab the buffalo

#1 suffocating

#2 blinking for the camera
#3 apparently getting hold of its genitals
Eventually the brothers took it down, and male #4 appears without even touching the prey

#4 stares somewhere while his brothers do the hard work

Selati legacy lives in Ximhungwe lioness in western Sabi Sand

The little cub on the last video of the post is the grandson of the Selati males and also of the Mantimahle... A great combination, isn't it?
Confirmed to be a male, he is the son of Ximhungwe female and Plains Camp males.
Hopefully he grows up to be an impressive male just like his grandfathers and fathers

Promising and impressive group for sure. If they remained 5 strong, it could have changed the power dynamics in all of SS. Same goes for their nemesis', the Majins. From what I have read, it is believed the 5th Majin may have been the dominant male at that time, though admittedly I am not so sure the 5th Majin would have affected the outcomes as much, they are already one of the most successful coalitions ever without him.
