#254

there are reports that a fight took place in June 2011 but it was between the Mapogos and the Matimbas in the east part of Elephant Planes.
Some people believed it was a fight between the Mapogos and the Majingilane but the Majingilane were too far away from that area those.
The Majingilane after killing one youngster from the Southern Pride stayed in Eastern Londolozi - Malamala area and spent their days on a Buffalo kill.
So the report of #254 should not be accurate.

The Fall Of The Male Lion Vulolo.
The Mapogo rampage continues december 2006
I can only imagine what it must have been like. From the tracks we found the next day we have an idea, but his last few minutes must have been like something out of a horror film.
Vulolo, father of the Tsalala cubs, dominant male of the North, the voice of the roars we had fallen asleep to in camp for the whole of the previous year, had either killed or stolen an impala, and was feeding on his prize in the darkness. He most likely would not have recognized the first face to arrive at his kill, either attracted by the smell of the meat, or by his territorial roaring. Perhaps he even fancied his chances having seen a single male challenger, perhaps one just below prime size, indignantly running towards his meal. Perhaps he did not run at first, and stood to face his challenger.
His heart would have sunk at the sight of a second large male lion running towards him from the blackness, his courage replaced by a dark fear. Most likely, as he turned to run, he would have seen another, then another, then another, and then even another snarling male lion, running at him from all sides, teeth bared, manes flowing in the wind, and as he felt the heat of their breath and felt the pain from their claws, his horrible and violent fate would have dawned on him. These were the voices he had heard the wind bringing on many a night from the far West. The Mapogo had finally found him… but they not only intended to silence him…. they were going to eat him.
I hope for his sake his life ended quickly. The noise would have been literally sickening… the kind of thing guests think they would like to witness but would end up either not being able to watch or retching noisily over the side of the vehicle. There would have been an age of growling, of steam coming from their mouths and off his open carcass, as they fought amoungst each other over the prize parts of his body. All that they left was his mane and his tail.
It is so difficult as someone who has spent time watching the life of an animal unfold: one can’t help feeling some connection to a creature which has given you so much viewing pleasure, and with whom you have spent many intimate moments. We fear the worst for the young Tsalala cubs who are now without the protection of their father.

8/2009
The Mr. T and Kinky Tail hit list continues
Two nomads make their way into Mr. T and Kinky Tails territory. The previous 2 nomads that tried to step on their territory disappeared and were never seen again. Mr. T and Kinky Tail roaring and defiantly letting challengers know death awaits them.
New Blood roams the Djuma driving area in the form of two new male lions in the area
There is a new wave of lion politics evolving in the greater northern section of the Sabi Sands, with the appearance of two new up and coming male lions, making themselves known to the local prides. They first appeared around a month or so ago inside Djuma's northern territories coming out of Manyaleti, their origins a mystery.
Both are in the early prime of their lives and have already ventured as far south as Djuma's boundary with northern Mala Mala. Mapogo territory and dangerous ground for new up and comming male lions. The string of dead lions left in the Mapogo's wake on just about the enitre reserve, is a worrying reminder of the Mapogo's power and range.
The two new comers have already been ushered back north by the Mapogo's, two have been seen up in the area and have been heard most nights issuing audible warnings to the new comers to steer clear of their land.
The previous two boys who attempted a take over were last seen by myself, at Buffelshoek Dam, on the 19th of June this year.

10th June 2009
2 Mapogos/Mlowathis vs 3 Nomads

The powerful Mapogo/Mlowathi coalition took on the hard task of defending the biggest portion of Mapogo territory for almost 2 years. They were quite successful at it being outnumbered several times and succeeded in driving off countless coalitions and whenever they cornered an opponent, very seldom did they escape alive. All while dominating the multiple prides they had under their control in such a vast territory, quite a feat considering they were only 2.
In 2009 Africam reported an epic battle that ensued on June, 2009 between the Mlowathi males and an aggressive young and prime coalition of 3 males estimated at 4-5 years old. The 3 intruders entered Mala Mala while the Mlowathi or Mapogo boys were seen mating days earlier with 2 Styx females further up east. The 3 males came into Mala Mala with bad intentions and soon after, Kinky Tail and Mr. T picked up on the scent of the intruders. Kinky Tail and Mr. T quickly hunted down the 3 new males to defend their prides and territory. Once Kinky Tail and T came into contact with the rival males, Africam reported that an intense war ensued between the two coalitions on June 10th, 2009. After the battle, the end result saw the 3 intruders vanishing from Mala Mala and out of Mapogo territory. The Mlowathi boys had triumphed once again despite being outnumbered 2-3. The two frontline soldiers and hitmen of the Mapogo coalition had done their job and helping their brothers in the West live a more normal and quiet life.

Mr. T Kill another Lioness

Mlowathi male, 3 Styx lionesses and 2 sub adult female lions – 16 November 2009

The Mlowathi male with the Mohawk was found near Campbell Koppies. He was running north. After following him for a while, we noticed some female lions ahead of him – he was clearly chasing them. Little did we know that this would become not only one of the sightings of the year, but also an eye-opening experience as to the nature of lions, and how harsh life in the wild can be.
Eventually after a long chase we could identify 3 Styx pride lionesses and two sub adult females – all running away from the Mlowathi male. Over the past few months the Mlowathi males have been “picking off” these sub adult lions of the Styx pride as they establish territory and want to force the Styx lionesses into estrous. Eventually the adult lionesses halted and left the two sub adults to their own defenses against the male who was now close on the heels of the one cub.

One sub adult got away, but the second was not so lucky. Now all the attention of the pursuing male was on her. Eventually after a 45 minute chase, the sub adult had been reeled in and lay in a submissive posture while the massive Mlowathi male stood over her, both cats catching their breaths. Eventually the Mlowathi male stepped closer, and the young lioness, knowing her fate, tried to fight. But with a swift and powerful blow with his right paw, the younger lion dropped. Immediately the Mlowathi male’s powerful jaw clamped down on her neck and broke it - all was over in a few seconds. Observing guests gasped as the Mlowathi male left the scene, and the sub adult lioness lay lifeless.
The Mlowathi male then joined up with the Styx lionesses, and although the lioness had finished her estrous cycle, she flirted with the male - almost as if to break the tension of the moment between the Mlowathi male and the other Styx lioness (the mother of the sub adult which had just been killed). Eventually all the lions relaxed. The shock, excitement and horror of the last hour subsided as the lions went to sleep, with no sign of the last standing sub-adult male Styx lion.

He passed a lot of time with the Mapogos and lions in general.
Here's what he have to said about the Mapogos:
"I honestly believe that the Mapogos were a once in a lifetime coalition, there will never be lions like them, they commanded respect and showed behaviour that still cant really be explained to this day...i have spent most of my life in the bush and never seen lions like them. Mapogos werent the biggest lions ive seen but they had a presence about them, that and being the first of the large coalitions also puts them above the rest. Our coalition is currently 6 males and as much as id like them to be Mapogo they just arent, they dont have that Mapogos personality even though they are a big coalition like mapogo were. Notch and his sons arent Mapogos, the Majingis arent Mapogos, the Selatis arent Mapogo the Olifants west males arent Mapogos and neither are the Matimbas.....those who got to know the Mapogos are privilaged to have been in the presence of such awesome lions."

thks for the posts @fursan syed

i believe Mala Mala has recently revamp their rangers blog. They used to have specific diary of the coalitions in their area. I remember reading the rangers blog last year on the history of West Street Males which i'm certain all of us know are the fathers of the Mapogos. Updated monthly, this diary chronicles very detailed events of this legendary coalition. I just can't stop reading. Regrettably i could no longer find this article online anymore.
