5 matimbas were together when they were dominant over nukhumu's, they split when the older 3 went north since they were originally from orpen, and HB/GINGER started to move towards the styx but the 2 male subadults were still with the pride, and that's when their 2 sisters broke away from the pride to remove HB and ginger and that's when the birmi's showed up in 2015 and killed the cubs and 1 female. the matimbas left them to go south and that's when they moved into londoliza. the 3 northern matimba were probably more battle ready then the southern matimba's because HB was doing most of the fighting and killing. most of the males that are in their prime now like the giraffe and Avoca's, machaton males were all still pretty young so they didn't stand a chance. the avoca male's were they males that killed one of the matimbas but that's when they were old already and it was 3 on one! that's what makes the majingalane male s and the notch boys very extrodinary when it came to warfare! they knew that the numbers is what made them strong!

Thanks for the comprehensive information swtlei4u. From reading about Southern Matimbas, I did get the sense that Hairy Belly was doing most of the fighting and Ginger was very selective in picking his battles -- an odd dynamic but one that will probably make Ginger the last surviving Matimba.
I have also read several accounts that refer to the Northern Matimbas as "dark maned" and the Southern Matimbas as "golden maned." Not sure how this applies to HB and I wonder if he was may be fourth in the picking order and drifted off with Ginger in tow.
The Matimbas were very successful in their own rite.
Matimbas intially looked like they wer going to live a long life but they went through a lot last year and that definitely decreased their lifespan by a big margin...

Lions always move to a less competitive area.
Yeah. If no roars heard or lack of scent when they are out on patrols then they will just assume the land is vacant and fill the void accordingly. That's why it's so important to constantly patrol and not "rest on your laurels". Get lazy and some potential visitors could show up in the form of rival coalition males.

It sure helps a an old male if he was huge in his prime. As the muscles shrink, the large frame remains and so HB has looked formidable far past his prime, I was surprised to see him fend off other young males not long ago.
A ranger commented on isntagram saying the matimbas aren’t chasing after the othawa lioness with cubs which was intially feared and expected. Many times they have been less than a km apart and nothig has happened. The cubs may have a chance of survivals.
Hairy belly also fed with styx cubs on a kill MalaMala. Those cubs were sired by Birmingham....
And recently Ginger also fed with Styx pride with cubs fed had a kill with Ginger Matimba..
So i am pretty sure the Old males have seen the light and won’t kill young cubs which do not pose them any threat.

I really hate it when someone shares sth on this plateform without confirming it...
Sorry Chris
I just talked to Singita ranger Joffers, he said they were Birmingham Males and he will share updates on them this morning.
