Lions of Sabi Sands

A new group of seven male lions has made landfall at Lion Sands, spending most of their time on the Kruger National Park side. The coalition of seven is made up of six Nkuhlu males and one Delaporte male.

These males have already made a name for themselves by killing one of the lionesses from the Sand River pride and feeding on her. This is an uncommon occurrence in the animal kingdom, but not unfamiliar to us, as the Mapogo coalition was well-known for doing the same.

They have ventured into the Sabi Sand and encountered the Gijima Male Coalition. For now, the Gijimas stand strong, but it will be an interesting time for lion dynamics in the Sabi Sand and Southern Kruger if these males stick together.

Well... It's now 6, as Dreadlocks was attacked and possibly killed yesterday as we know and it's rumored that 2 of the 6 are sickly.

Days before the terrible fight between two male lions and Dreadlocks De La Porte, I found these two lions farther down on the Nkhulu road on the way from Skukuza, in the Kruger National Park. Are these the 2 Southern Avoca Male Lions? It would make perfect sense, as they were the one's who attacked Dreadlocks a couple of days ago, confirmed via video footage and reports. After watching the footage of the fight today, one can clearly see Male Lion Dreadlocks, in pain, with heavy blood loss from the abdominal area and what seems to be a badly broken back leg. The two Lions who attacked him, was roaring loudly while attacking and after, to make their presence known as they do during territory/coalition fights. It's the typical Lion fight video, with them circling Dreadlocks, who fends bravely like a true warrior. After the Nkhulu's killed a Sand River Pride Lioness in Sabi Sands and another lioness earlier, it was inevitable that they were coming for revenge, and Dreadlocks was first in line unfortunately. Is the fate sealed for the young Nkhulu males? How will they go on and prosper? Kruger National Park has had it's fair share of lions loss in the past week, let's really hope it calms down. Too many legends are falling.

I have grown more and more concerned for the safety of Floppy Ear Styx since the reports surfaced the Gijimas were spending more and more time around the Pride territory.    The mothers seem to be relenting to the pressure and are no longer actively avoiding them……this spells huge danger for FE and also the younger females of the Pride.    Will we see another miraculous GIJIMA sparing  the lives of the young like they did with Southern Pride, or as more confident Males now, act less tolerant.    I do fear that Floppy Ear must realize he has to start his nomadic journey now…before it’s too late.

I'll be extremely surprised if they accept the female subs. As for the male, unfortunately he has to go nomadic alone... Or maybe some of his sisters will join him for a while.

Singita Sabi Sands update
  • The Mhangene Pride continue to blow our guests away with amazing lion viewing. The cubs are extremely comfortable around the vehicles which provide us with plenty of entertainment as they chase and play with one another without a care in the world. We are not absolutely sure on how many there are as there are three different litters that are not always brought out at the same time. We have seen nine around a wildebeest kill and another lioness was seen carrying a single cub on the same day at a different location. The cubs are looking healthy and with full bellies, so this bodes well for their future development.

  • One still May afternoon we watched the two Ximungwe lionesses with the Plains Camp lions on Makalashi clearing. One of the males was attempting to mate with the youngest female. At the moment the Sand River has been the ideal refuge for these two females as well as the Nkuhuma lioness and her two older offspring, however with the Talamati Pride are also nearby so conflict will be inevitable.

Pretty sure BDMs consider themselves territorial males in the area , if they find him, they would try to kill him.

In this case, it would be Skorro jr becoming a partner of the young Scorro male, I think I put my line wrong
