@NLAL11 I never said Nhenha was small, I said rangers have said he wasn't big which is true, rangers have said that.

We can tell the Nkuhuma male is taller? How? He is much closer to the camera, it's impossible to say who's taller, we can only clearly see that PCM have much more impressive frames.

Sorry to pick out your post in particular but it's simply as it's the most recent one of this nature. It always surprises me when rangers or guides who have actually seen these males, experienced their 'personalities' first hand for months or even years and have immense knowledge about the bush are questioned about their views.

Camera and video angles can be incredibly hard to judge; an animal even a meter closer to the camera than another at a relatively low angle will seem bigger. As an angler as well, I can tell you that this trick is used often enough to make a fish look bigger, haha.

Well, we absolutely do not know whatever befell the Othawa sons of the first generation from Sassay Othawa and Junior from the older Mapogo daughter.  They could be alive now, bidding their time deep in Kruger somewhere.  Nobody knows otherwise.  Their alleged deaths are just speculation until someone speaks out with proof to that effect.  How many lions we never, ever get to see in the KNP!  Countless, no doubt.  We are not even getting any single clue from rangers or safaris, because nobody is actually actively looking around for them.  We're just hoping to stumble into them somehow, which is like finding a needle in a haystack.  Chances are equal that they could be alive vs. dead.  Not all males survive the nomadic stage.

Yes, a lone male is almost a liability if he's not only fit, but does not show good judgement, in the end.  However, we see 'smarter' lone males who are QUITE successful for single males, (And perhaps with just a little bit of luck on their side, too!)  Mapoza, Imbali Male, and RR, just to name a few.

Yes, I am not denying that there are succesfull males. But the thing is. That's still comparing a select few male lions against the average lioness.

You should post these Kruger coalitions in " Coalitions of Kruger National Park" thread.

Interesting bits at 3:37 and 04:54 to the end, explains why male lions sometimes mount each other. Apparently the same area of the brain is responsible for mounting and mating with a female and mounting another male to assert dominance.

To go off on an unrelated topic, this kind of explains why some species display homosexual behavior. As if the wiring in the ventromedial hypothalamus is different in some individuals and they will mount and mate with other males instead of females. Very interesting stuff.
