Sandro
We've got footage from NatGeo from his capture, turns out Sandro was not baited, nor was he full belied as initially believed before being captured on the snare if we go by the shown footage of the capture of the female. The official weight of 130 kg is mentioned twice throughout the video, including by Gediendson himself. Not only was Sandro not full-bellied prior to being snared, but it took the team several hours to get to him after his capture, in the event he had any stomach content, such content would have been quickly assimilated into the body as big cats have a very fast metabolism. It seems like Sandro was laid with his upper body where several organs are located inclined on higher ground which gave him the appearance of having a fuller belly. Not saying he was empty just not gorged. In the first part of the video it is mentioned that he weighed "around" 130 kg, since Gustavo Fonseca told us he weighed more than 130 kg, I believe I stand correct in that the 130 kg value was adjusted as an estimate minus the stomach content he may have had. This footage is also really good because it tells us that contrary to popular belief, when captured with snares jaguars do not gorge on the bait used to lure them into the snare, the stress they have after being captured would keep them from being interested in the meat, this is why deducting weight off of the official weight given based on the amount of meat put on the snare is not an accurate way of arriving at an "empty-bellied" weight. As in the case with Lopez, we do not know if he ate the 3-4 kg of fish put in his bait before being captured, not to mention the assimilation process into the body I described before for any other stomach content the jaguar may have had prior to being snared, which would assimilate into the body in the hours that take the biologists to approach to tranquilize it and take measurements:  *This image is copyright of its original author  *This image is copyright of its original author  *This image is copyright of its original author  *This image is copyright of its original author  *This image is copyright of its original author Credits to NatGeo

Dominant males 2017 "Geoff Jaguar, now an 11 year old male, became habituated to boats on various rivers in the Amazon basin of the Pantanal as a cub due to his habituated mother. Easily recognizable because of an upper left lip injury, Geoff can be seen in a variety of youtube videos catching or attempting to catch prey. This jaguar kill, death, and drag took less than 11 minutes. Because those overhanging vines hindered the cat from quickly hiding its prey in thick vegetation, as jaguars typically do, all of us in nearby boats had the privilege of time to observe. Two observations that surprised me were how long the jaguar could hold its breath underwater during the fight. I could see parts of both species above the surface, but not the jaguar head for what seemed like ages. The second observation showed the amazing strength to hoist the carcass up a steep embankment then to drag the carcass up the hill with only the right side of its mouth! Jaguars have the strongest bite of any cat and many references state it kills with one bite at the base of the neck. But after searching many articles, youtube videos, and my on-site observation, it may also use asphyxiation. According to our fantastic Brazilian guide, Paulo Boute, who’s led tours for 35 years in Brazil, this attack was the first instance of a caiman kill in the river for both species. So Xingu has literally been compared to three of the largest males in the area already including Edno, needless to say he's on his way to likely becoming one of the biggest jaguars seen. He also noted how calm and friendly Xingu is next to the tourists, this is a good sign because it will allow us to get constant footage and pictures of him. By JGoulevitch |
