Jaguar Directory - Balam - 07-15-2020

I'm making this thread to make a compilation of new jaguars from areas where they are tracked and monitored to keep a track of their identities and unique patterns.

Female lineage at Aurora Reserve, Llanos

Mariposa, she's the oldest of the females in the area, first registered in 2009, estimated to be 14 years old, has mothered 11 known cubs. She's thought to have a recent new litter:

Guacaba, daughter of Cayenita, granddaughter of Mariposa, has mothered 3 cubs. She was seen mating with Mapire male in 2019 who is thought to have fathered her latest son known as Bayetón. Guacaba and Mapire:

Lulu is therefore the fourth generation registered in the reserve, great granddaughter of Mariposa.

RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 07-16-2020

I had received previous information from Panthera that there had not done any captures made in Aurora to any jaguar, however, in this new video released by them we can see this female carrying a tracking collar. I'm guessing they must have started this new tracking through collars recently which is huge news because it would represent the first tracking of jaguars in the entire Llanos and Colombia through that method. Now all we need are for them to provide weights and measurements!

The jaguar ID Project sent me Edno's profile, they described him to me as "massive" in size

They also clarified with me that the jaguar fighting Juru is this video is actually Balam, and Balam is thought to be relatively young at 4 years of age

RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 07-19-2020

Finally, they told me that this year alone they have registered 21 new jaguars from the Porto Jofre region including some big males. I made them aware of our work here in WF and they want to help in bringing awareness as much as possible too. I will continue updation about new jaguars in the area as they come along.

Balam is probably a bit older than 4 because when I saw him last year he definitely looked at least 4, if not older and when he beat up Marley/Juru a year prior to that he definitely was an adult. He's a huge Jaguar as well,. Paulo said Balam is larger than Adriano. Paul Donahue is the main person in charge of the Jaguar ID project along with Paulo Barreiros.

Just to give you an idea of how densely populated the meetings of the 3 rivers is with adult Jaguars, last year they had over 65 individual adult Jaguars registered in that relatively small area.
It's the most densely populated Jaguar territory on earth, it has the most Caiman and Capybara as well and the territory males never last long. It's also very hard to see cubs there because it's so competitive and filled with the largest males that females with cubs don't stay in the area. Another fact is that the cubs that are bird. there generally are not seen back in the area after they leave which is what makes Juru/Marley so special. He's one of the few males who was actually born there and has stayed. He's been watched his entire life and the same can be said for the 2 brothers although they're just coming into adulthood now.

Yes, Balam is big, and he and Tusk have gotten even stockier this year, although talking to them I got the impression that Edno was even bigger than those two. It's also interesting that Edno was defeated by Adriano before, I wonder if he was the one who dethroned Adriano from the area. Getting their weights would be amazing, but they told me that due to the pandemic almost all work is paralyzed and they're relying on locals to provide pictures and information for them.

By all accounts, Edno is massive! But in the north it's almost impossible to know who's responsible for kicking another male out unless its witnessed due to the fact that there are so many massive, territory holding males in the area.

They have been crushed by the Pandemic and tourism will continue to suffer for quite some time. A sad note, the boat-hotel I stayed on was owned by an indivdual who died from Covid. Any loss of life is sad but especially so when it's someone who contributes to the eco tourism needed to protect these cats and the Pantanal in general.

PANTANAL: New male registered from PJ area:

"NEW RECORD TODAY!

The jaguar on the left is a male I that I haven’t seen before, it was a great record for me!
The female on the right is a jaguar that know for 4 years, she was pregnant in March, now I don't understand if she lost her babies or if she is distracting the male to protect her cubs. I am going to keep studying about it to find out what happened."

CERRADO: Unknown male who constantly visits captive jaguars Xavante and Pantera left pugmarks in the sand, judging by their size Leandro Silveira's wife and himself described the male as "very big", comparison with hand:

Could this be the same unknown male responsible for killing Tiago? There's always the possibility.

RE: Jaguar Directory - Pckts - 07-19-2020

Large pugmarks, I wish they measured them.

It would be great if they could place some camera traps outside the cage to get a view of this tom, or maybe clarify if it's an already known male from the area like Rogério visiting back.
