There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Wow, this is increidbly sad. I knew that Snip Tail was gonna not last very long after his relocation, espceially after the HP young male's death. This marks the end of the Mpondo coalition, one of the most susccesful and famous coalitions which formed out of 3 batches of totally unrelated males.

Mpondo was poached first.    HP was killed afterwards.

Hippo died a couple weeks after relocation so he died before Mpondo it seems. Tracks showed Hippo going east then he wanted to go south over Luvuvhu river but the collar showed he tried crossing but changed his mind and went north instead. Mpondo apparently just swam the river at another time with no problem even though it was really high.

It seems like a tragic story if you put aside the point at which they were taken there. I hope the park staff are aware that they need to do a better job of identifying relocation areas as it wasn't as if they didn't know what was going on in the area, there's no point in wasting time and resources sending animals to their death,  thinking that for by some miracle they will survive and thrive. This type of error must be remembered as a way to avoid new cases and seek solutions for these places before trying to reintroduce species.

He seems to be fine. Nothing appears to be bothering him, and he remains a succesful dominant male with his 2 brothers

Dark mane Hippo Pools male sporting some injuries. From what I've read he and his bother ventured out of the Mjejane area of Kruger and he was attacked elsewhere in KNP. Whom the attackers were is unknown. They're back at Mjejane now and according to Kingfisher River Lodge he's on the mends. Definitely not a great time for them to start exploring other areas given the seven (7) cubs they currently have with the Mjejane lionesses.
