Good news & progress in Kawal Tiger Reserve
A male tiger was photographed by a camera trap deep inside Kawal Tiger Reserve in the former Adilabad district confirming presence of tiger after a year.  *This image is copyright of its original author On Saturday, forest department released a camera trap image of the male tiger with the reserve’s Field Director Chandrashekhar Saravanan saying that a “robust male tiger” was captured by a camera trap. The images of the tiger were captured at Kadem range of Khanapur division of the reserve, in Nirmal district. “We are continuously monitoring its movement. We suspect it came to Kawal either from the Tippeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary or Tadoba National Park in Maharashtra. We have sent the images of the tiger to Maharashtra Forest Department to determine its identity." The staff are also creating awareness among public in adjoining villages about the presence of the tiger to avoid conflicts. The locals were also advised not to take their cattle for grazing far inside the reserve. 2 Nilgais at a water-hole. Parts of Kawal Tiger Reserve has a good prey base of various species of deer.  *This image is copyright of its original author He said the presence of tiger showed that efforts of the Forest Department on habitat improvement, including grassland development, providing water holes besides strict protection measures over the past few years, were beginning to yield good results now. Felling of trees was prohibited and enforced strictly. In that forest division, out of the 22,000 hectares of reserve forest area, the local villagers were restricted only to 5,000 hectares where they could take their cattle for grazing. The rest of the forest area was not disturbed. To providing a disturbance-free atmosphere in the core area of the reserve, Saravanan said the department was taking steps for relocating two villages — Rampur and Maisampet — from the core. The 144 families in these villages have agreed to a relocation plan. “They were provided with two options, first was a Rs 10 lakh cash-only compensation package, and second includes a rehabilitation package with half of the package provided in cash. About 50 per cent of the families chose the second option. We are in the process of having land for their rehabilitation denotified so construction of houses can begin,” he said. The National Tiger Conservation Authority has also allocated Rs 8.72cr funds for shifting & resettlement of the villagers. The Lady driver said " Bagh bola!!... Aap log rukna ,hum dekh ke aate hai..." and she put her gypsy in reverse gear, accelerated backwards a few hundred meters and took a halt. Our guide suggested we also should go and check even further beyond, near Sringarpura Talab. It was just near the sunset time. The water body by the grassland was enveloped in the Saal jungle shadows, away from the acute angled light gold light rays. Some vague ambient light was hanging around the talab area highlighting yellows of the thick and taller grass blades. In that kind of low light conditions, we reached near the talab, our guide immediately spotted a huge tiger sitting just by the edge of the water. Umarpani!... I knew it was him the moment I saw his face.... Indeed it was him! We just parked right to get good visual of him and he Started growling, REAL loud... As more vehicles arrived at the spot, he got up and started walking towards the grassland, giving us nice view of his back... still growling so loud that even though he was facing away from us we could hear the echos reflecting in the woods around! They say Umarpani is not really a "show off" tiger, who would give much attention to such paparazzi! He wouldn't even walk on the road for long unlike other few wild tigers' habits Continuing in the direction of the Saal jungle, he walked by the edge of the water, marking his territory multiple times and taking cover of yellow thick grass which ere matching up with his stripes.... Still growling... He vanished in to the jungle behind but we could still hear his loud and enchanting growls from distance as we took our way back to end our safari!
