First sighted tiger in Gujarat.
The tiger seen near Gatt Boriya village of Gujarat's Mahisagar district (very very Close to Gir Lion range) Wow .
A teacher photographed the Tiger.
The Forest Department initiated search operation.
Officials visited and reached the place where Tiger is sighted for confirmation.
Traces of Tiger's hair and claws were found. Night vision camera planted throughout the area.
Tiger might have came form Madhya Pradesh...

Such a good news! Wow shocked Interesting that, "Maharashtra" Tiger needs more time to fully conquer Dangs forests which was first expected to become tiger zone in Gujarat but may take 1 year more or so but still there was presence, clues and evidences in other area Mahisagar district too from "Madhya Pradesh" Tiger in the past news but more in Dangs... There are about 3 more places bordering, Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra in which tiger may reoccupy Gujarat's forests. Wow

Actually, I saw this news yesterday evening, but I'm out of station then. Ok, let's see how our Gujarat govt will conserve this new cat, will they improve their numbers in their state, like they did to lions.. let's see...

It could only have been from Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary (proposed to be a tiger reserve, but nothing happened). The forest had reached its carrying capacity long ago & he just started moving west through the forests on Vindhya Range. Nobody knows where he finally ended up.
However, no news of any tiger dying had been noted in the region.

As the forests toward the northwest are too sparsed & scrubby, the tiger that was recently seen in Dangs forest of Gujarat could very likely be him.

As camera-trap images confirmed it was him that made headlines in Gujarat, my earlier^prediction about the transient male from Ratapani travelling west to end up in Gujarat turned out to be true... Partially however, as i'd hoped he would turn south towards the larger forests that could keep him safe.

So the are probably tigers in Gujarat in two places along the Western Ghats, the male from MP in Mahisagar District to the north & the reported Dangs population to the south, connected to both Melghat & Sahyadri Tiger Reserves.

But the problem is neither have any suitable tiger habitats, let alone Protected Areas or preybase.
Dangs have human habitations in enclaves all over the forest & Mahisagar has only highly fragmented tiny forest patches. Only reason there's been no considerable conflict yet is because population of there is quite low.

Jhala suggested developing Dangs as a proper new tiger habitat, with village relocation & preybase development. But that will take time... years probably. Time we don't have. The tiger needs a home right now, & mate, or else he'll keep wandering until his luck runs out.

Gujarat govt. is already trying to track & locate the male in his prime. The best move right now would be to capture & move him to the Sulpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary (600 sq.km) which is the only proper Protected Area in the region that CAN PROMISE HIM A FUTURE.

@Rishi

As crazy as this sounds couldn't the local forest department of gir national park offer to take the tiger there?
Since there it is also guaranteed protection too.

That would make absolutely no sense even if Gir weren't full (not that any such offer was be made).

A lone male tiger has zero conservation value. He has to be protected, alongside females to breed with, in a forest habitat connected to other tiger populations; from where more tigers will come in future to breed with his progeny & maintain a genetically diverse viable population.
