The Ximhungwe lion pride with one of the Mapogo lion coalition with a waterbuck meal. Pretty boy Mapogo is very tolerant of the cubs feeding with him but does not let the adult lioness approach!

Mapogo Males

Over the course of 8 days a male giraffe is eaten by lions, hyenas, vultures and leopard. It was found first with a huge male leopard feeding on the giraffe, then came the hyenas. The leopard returned to feed on the giraffe only to be replaced by the hyenas again. Eventually the lions arrived to eat the giraffe - First the Mapogo Male Lion coalition, then the Tsalala Pride of lions. What was left of the giraffe, the vultures cleaned up.

The Ximhungwe lion pride with their small cubs relaxing in the afternoon sun, the cubs were interested in Pretty Boy Mapogo but the big lion was more interested in sleeping. Unreleased footage fro the 2011 archive.

That night the coalition crossed the river, killed the territorial male and proclaimed the Western Sector of the Sabi Sands as their own."

Was Makhulu born in the Tsalala/Marthly Pride? The evidence suggests that he didn't.

Former Londolozi ranger Oliver Sinclair writes:

"I'll never forget driving along Nanga Road in the north and finding the Tsalala Pride lying next to the road. The lioness was looking strong and she still had her 2 cubs, except they weren’t cubs anymore. They were now 4 years old and the male had developed into a most beautiful specimen of a lion. He was large with broad shoulders and a full mane that was both light and dark. The Tsalala Pride had adopted another male of a similar age to the beautiful male but he didn’t compare to the regalness of this young male. The adopted young male eventually left the pride and joined the Sparta Pride where he was able to bond with five very young male lions and in time the six of them would become the Mapogos. This was around 2002/2003."

"In 1997, two females broke away from their original pride of the Castletons aka Ximungwe Pride. They became known as the Tsalala Pride named after the Tsalala Pan they frequented early on. These two Tsalala Lionesses mated with the five West Street/Sparta males, who also sired the Mapogos and produced seven cubs early in 1998. Sadly, only two cubs survived a male and a female. Gwarri Bush = Nhlanguleni, the dominant male of the Othawa Pride. Reply
