15. 35 lions of diverse prides lived in 2009/2010.

16. the border fence around inhabited area and the Tragedy of 5 Mapogo sons: On more than one occassion the Sand River Pride were driven out of the Sabi Sands by the Mapogos. Five were shot in April 2006 and the rest of the Sand River Pride were shot in January 2009 after they were driven out by the Mapogos and started feeding on cattle in Dumphries Village.
This pride got out the Sabi Sands when the Sand River came down in flood & the fence collapsed in January 2009. MPB put out an order to shoot the Lions. Hunters (Willem Botha & Co.) came in with dogs - 4 male sub adults/cubs & 2 females were killed. The 5th sub-adult male made it back into the safety of Sabi Sands but eventually died of starvation as he was too young to hunt properly for himself! All 5 Mapogo sons were born in 2007.
Events of the year 2010

17. a little addendum why the Mapogos didn't conquer the whole south. The Selati aka Southern pride is a very loyal pride to their dominant males who have assisted them in territorial fights. Between 2004 and 2005 a war raged in this area between the Mapogos on one side and the 5 Southern pride males and their natal pride on the other. The 5 Mapogos tried again and again but the Selati pride was overwhelming with its 5 males and 6 females. The Mapogos conquered the tip of the south and tried their luck by taking over the Charleston pride. But the same situation there too: the 4 Charleston females actively support their dominant males, the 4 Skukuza males. The still inexperienced Mapogo brothers finally turned and positioned themselves in the middle from where they finally attacked Nhlanguleni. The 6 Mapogos, the 5 Southern Pride and the Skukuza males gave all and there were serious injuries on all sides. One of the reasons why the Mapogos later rarely marched south. 3 of the 5 Southern pride males moved into the Kruger, the 2 remaining will later go down in history as the Golf Course males and thus as the fathers of the 5 Selati males.

18. The war between the Mapogos and their half-brothers Rollercoaster has been raging since 2008. Both coalitions ruled and dominated the scene of Sabi sands during that time. After the 2nd Rollercoaster male was killed by a crocodile, the last Rollercoaster male accepted the young Tsalala male Solo and formed a coalition with him. Especially Kinky Tail and Mr T hunt down their half brother. On January 1st 2010 the Rollercoaster passed away and the Tsalala male was SOLO again as so often.

19. Dramatic events took place in 2010. The 3 Toulon brothers who were evicted by Mr T and Kinky Tail in 2009 settled south and took over the Selati/southern pride and the Charleston pride. In May 2010, a new threat to the mapogo empire made its way east from the north: the 5 Majingilane brothers. Kinky Tail and Mr T cleared the way up north for them because they were more central back then.

19. In June 2010, the 4 Mapogo brothers (Makhulu, Dreadlocks, Pretty Boy and Rasta) were kings of the west. Mr T and Kinky Tail continued to keep an eye on the Central, part of the North and the East, while at the tip of the South lone Solo and his pride of Sparta held their own. In the south came a new force, the KNP males Freddy and Limper, who drove out the Toulons. On June 8th 2010 the Mlowathi Boys Kinky Tail and Mr t killed the 5th Majingilane and at the same night the 4 remaining Majingilane brothers killed Kinky Tail. By the end of June Mr T turned back to his 4 older brothers in the West. On 5th July 2010 the 5 Mapogos marched into Majingilane territory for revenge. The newcomers fled into Kruger but returned after the Mapogos left the area. Why days later Pretty boy and Rasta separated from the coalition, disappeared for weeks and only Pretty boy turned up badly injured remains a mystery to this day. At the end of the year the next shock: the mighty Dreadlocks suddenly disappeared and only years later it was confirmed that his skin had been sighted in a hut in a neighboring village.

It was thought that there would be a battle between the old rivals. But out of nowhere, 3/4 of the Matimbas also joined and now it was a showdown of the extra class: in the middle of the night the sounds of a battle rang through the bush. Days later, the Mapogos were slowly seen roaring away to the west. They all had wounds and especially Makhulu was badly marked, nevertheless they remained the old kings and did not surrender to the young and powerful Matimbas, who now took their anger out on the Majingilanes and expelled them in August. While these 3 coalitions were openly opposed, a new coalition, the 5 Selati brothers, was approaching from the south. After the Mapogos tracked them down to the west and drove them east, one of them was killed by the 4 Majingilanes during their reconnaissance in enemy territory.

The End of an era - 2012

22. Lion prides of 2012. On March 16, 2012, the Selatis finally managed, after several attempts, to separate one of the Mapogos named Mr T and mortally wounded him, or rather mauled him. The grandchildren of their half-brothers (Rollercoaster) managed to end the years of terror of the Mapogos. The last Mapogo warriors, Makhulu and Pretty Boy, came weeks later looking for Mr T, but avoided a fight with the Selatis. They migrated south and met the KNP males there. In July 2012, the situation was similar to that of the year before. The Majingilanes moved to their southern borders and were within striking distance of KNP males Freddy and Limper. Also nearby were Makhulu and Pretty boy who now lived as nomads. A fight ensued one night and all that is known is that both Makhulu and Limper disappeared for weeks. In August, the wounded Makhulu reunited with his partner Pretty boy while Limper was found dead. It was a final battle of the notorious ancient kings of Sabi Sands. Although they could try to take advantage of the situation and attack the lonely Freddy, they knew from their past experience that the girls from the Selati pride would follow their king and also defend him. It would definitely be the last fight for both Mapogos. They left Sabi Sand and moved into Kruger and stayed in the Crocodile Bridge area. There they found that another powerful coalition of 6 males ruled the area, the Gomondwane. Sometime in October 2012, both suddenly appeared in Londolozi and fed on a buffalo carcass. Her condition had deteriorated and PB in particular looked very vulnerable. He soon disappeared forever and is thought to have died of Bovine TB. Makhulu was seen one last time in early 2013 in Mala Mala, the place where he grew up and from where the whole Mapogo story was carried into the world.

23. the Mapogos may have gone but their pawprints are still engraved in the hot sand in their former kingdom, the biggest lion kingdom in history

24. their story is one of the extra class, one that showed us the lion kingdom from a different perspective. The Mapogos showed us what it means to be a lion. Hail to the Kings!

This is an amazing story of the Mapgo males, I have yet to seen such detailed stories about lion dynamics during the Mapogo era. Great work Leo!

Excellent summary bro!!
Very interesting to know that the Majingilane actually avoided a conflict when the 5 Mapogos went back for revenge by going into Kruger, after killing Kinki-tail.

They had big, but being in Kruger, we actually dont know how exactly big.

We know that Mpondos territory around mid 2019 - early 2020 streched from around Renosterkoppies to around Afsaal, based of their sightings, and then  around mid 2020, 3 Mpondos where seen all the way to Lion Sands and Skukuza, ousting DeLaportes, while 2 stayed in Jock area.

That was too vast of a territory even for them, eventualy is prob the reason of their downfall in late 2020, only 1 Mpondo survived to early 2021.

Having such a vast territory, even for big coalitions, its actually not that "great" because they are too scattered and divided, they can easily get targeted (same thing happened to Mapogos).

Mantimahles at their peak around 2018-19 also had massive territory, approx. in between Skukuza - Leeupan - s79 - Nwatimhiri quadrant.

Obiviously towards mid to late 2019, 4 of them started to abandon their northern territory and focused on the southern areas, while 5th lost northern area to S. Avocas.

I doubt the Mapogo sons were driven out of SS by their fathers, according to Rob they were 1yo and the same age of the Othawa males who were only driven out by their fathers in 2011. They left by their own account, because the fence fell. The other cub who died, according to Rob, IIRC, joined the Othawa pride but was killed by hyenas.
