Lions of Sabi Sands

At times there appears to be a begrudging respect between the two apex predators.
Breaking News! We discovered not 1 but 2 new den sites today! One on Ostrich Koppies and the other on Campbell Koppies. We kept our distance and viewed from afar but we saw at least 3 and 2 cubs respectively. So there are at least 5 new members to the pride of 6 lionesses that broke away from the Marthly Breakaway pride (mangheni). Back of camera shot by ranger Roan Ravenhill

Lion vs Crocodile at @Kirman's Kamp Have a look at this video of the Sandriver male lion defending his buffalo kill from a massive Nile crocodile at andBeyond Travel's Kirkman's Kamp. We knew that with the Sand River flowing again that Kirkman's Kamp was in for some amazing animal sightings in the river. We, however, had no idea it would come so soon. Yesterday afternoon we watched two members of the Sandriver pride chase and catch a buffalo in the middle of the river. In the morning the river rose rapidly allowing a crocodile to move towards the buffalo kill while the lions fed. The crocodile evidently felt it had the advantage over the Sandriver male lion as the crocodile continuously made advances to steal the lions buffalo kill. The lion defended its kill with ferocious smacks from its front paws, but the crocodile kept advancing. The lion stood his ground in the water against the crocodile, but when three unknown male lions came down from the eastern side of the riverbank the Sandriver male made a hasty escape from the three, leaving the crocodile to its prize. It will be interesting this afternoon to see whether the three male lions approach the buffalo carcass in the river and push the crocodile off? Video by Messham Photography

Well, that one is interesting. I thought the Mantimahle were farther away, but it seems they're closer to the Sabi Sands than I thought.
The Sand river male is going to have to be way more careful from now on, if he makes it, that is.
So, a lot has been said in the past hours.
People are saying that the beat up male is one of the Sparta males.  *This image is copyright of its original author Also, there was this publication from Kirkman's Kamp. An incredible morning on Kirkmans today 3 Mantimahle males which were on a mission chasing another 4 unknown male lions around the eastern bank of the Sand River. With the Sand River pride in the same area, will this mean a Pride takeover? Exciting times ahead as only time will tell what will happen! I wonder who are these 4 males. Are they the Manghenis + Talamati males? Are they those new males?

There was talk of Sand River pride and i mistakenly thought he was the Sand River male. Probably the Sparta males took over the control of the pride. If the Mhangeni males haven't already taken over the pride, they are very close; in fact, they already beat up and chased away from the pride the young Sand River male (see the reply #361). It happens.
The boy did what he had to, the three didn't stick together when they left the pride, the results are seen now. I wonder where the third one is now, that is even if he's alive. |
