That area, or Londolozi on itself is somewhat of a nolions area between the established prides and coalitions. So it often is where nomadic lions like the Tsalala lioness settle for a while as it is safer than trying to survive in the core of another lions territory.
I guess this guy got a bit overconfident and has yet to realize the true nature of his stake. But, in fact, it was that poaching dentist and his guide having moved the collar around in the bush so often that lead the researchers to realize something was off with Cecil. The researchers said something isn't right, he is moving around way too much.
