She is a good mother.
Subadult? Older cubs are barely 12-13 months, younger were born in May-June so not even a year, most likely.

  • We have had some incredible lion viewing throughout April with a constant being the two Plains Camp males, who each night echo their roars out into the heavy cool air. They truly have placed themselves well as the dominant male lions of Singita Sabi Sand and have done everything they can to make sure of the safety of the Nkuhuma lionesses and their cubs.
  • With that there also comes some tragedy with the finding of the body of one of the Talamati lionesses (believed to be the tailless female, due to her no longer being viewed with the pride). It is unknown exactly what the cause of her death was, however the Plains Camp males had stolen a zebra carcass from the three young Nsevu males, and a lioness was seen moving onto the scene and being chased off by the two males. It is only speculation but due to us viewing a lioness being chased by the Plains Camp males, we think it was perhaps them that ended her life.
  • The Nkuhuma lionesses are doing extremely well and looking in great condition. It also seems as if the amber-eyed female is heavily pregnant so we look forward to hopefully welcoming some youngsters to their new found pride.
  • It seems as if the Mhangene Pride have been laying low now for quite some time in the southern parts of the reserve, however, one of the older lionesses has been seen on multiple occasions with the Plains Camp males. We have viewed her mating with the bigger of the two males and wonder if she won’t eventually draw the pride back into these areas. For now the Nkhuhuma females are keeping them well at bay.

Keep in mind, we are not talking about fleeing as in escaping a dangerous situation. But fleeing as in abandoning the pride and go nomadic again, even after the danger from the fight has passed.

Why would they escape long time ago? To this events they where never threatned..

They are not "mindless automats", but they certaintly cant logically plan the future, like us humans, thats the difference between humans and animals.

Its impossible that animal can plan the future by logic..

They operate by instincts and in the moment.

I am not suggesting they are making long term plans. If they did my argument would not even work because if they did, they would be more willing to leave.
I am just suggesting that those two had such a rotten time as a nomad, they may be more willing to take more risks by staying to avoid getting back into that situation than the average lion.

Auntie is infertile, Jr's mom isn't.
Though she has had terrible luck with her litters. Some of them disappeared pretty much immediately after their alleged birth, leading to rumours she has reproduction issues as well.
But due to her age, it may not matter.

Sassy would be the sole survivor should those two succumb to old age. But being one lioness potentially taking care of multiple cubs, she wont be able to stand up for her territory. So there is a risk that the Ximhungwe or Mhangeni pride displace her. Turning the once mighty pride in just another wandering lioness.

managed to rescue the five subadult Othawas out of the battlefield, save at least for now "

She did it before few times with Junior and mini Matimbas.

I remember when Othawa male and Mhangenis attacked, HB was not around, Sassy save the cubs and Junior, and 2 older females clashed with Mhangenis.

Also with Tumbelas, Sassy duty was to secure the subs, while 2 old females interacted with Tumbelas.

Looks like Othawas are well oiled machine in this kind of situations, it seems like every female knows their duty and role in this situations, quite interesting to observe.

Last year Nhena was seen running at fast speed after the Styx male. I think he could keep up with Nkuhuma male if he had to. Surely his overall condition and capacity to travel has not deterioated  so much since then that he couldnt keep up with the Nukuhuma male. It's not like he's restricted like Hairy Belly was 1-2 years before he died. His health and condition is still really good.

It was more of a joke. Sure he would keep up if wanted/needed.

It doesn't matter anyway, even if cubs survive until 2 years old they will have to leave since their mother will mate with some other male.

Is Skorro Jr's front right paw swollen, or is that the normal bend?

Females at that stage has good odds to be accepted by new dominant males. Young male through probably would have to leave indeed.

An interesting time ahead with the Lions in the Western Sector.
The Othawa Pride have been dodging 2 new coalitions coming in both from the North and South East.
A few nights ago the lion activity around the lodge was intense. We listened to roaring lions the whole night and the next morning was a huge challenge to track the lions. We followed tracks of 3 males running and chasing each other all the way down to the South.
Finally we caught up with the Birmingham and Nkuhuma males. By the sounds of it we believe they were being chased by the Tumbela Male.
