There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.
I can only talk for myself, but I've never underestimated, in the slightest, the DM brother ( not saying you're claiming I did ).
He's not as reckless as his brother but that's about it, he is always there supporting Blond Gijima in these clashes.
As for the scenario you speculate, we sort of saw that already in the 4v2 clash.
I think that while the bond obviously has its role in leading a male to try to save his brother/partner, I believe individual strength plays a larger role.
Some lions bond together after a relatively short time but manage to be a strong coalition and help one another in clashes, say the Thanda Impi or Orpen males, others are blood brothers who lived their entire lives together, but still can't do it properly, like S.BDM and Kambulas.
So what I mean is that if DM Gijima does his best to save his brother in such scenario, rather than he doing it out of a stronger bond compared to what say the Nkuhlu share among themselves, it'd be out of superior confidence.
Same as if the Nkuhlu were to abandon a brother who got caught, I think rather than it being because their bond is weak, it'd be because of low confidence, the fear that if they went to help they'd be the ones dying instead.
I think almost all these lions have similar levels of strong bonds, it's how they're built to be after all, social animals bonding together to have higher chances of achieving things in life.
Your example with other famous duos is interesting however. I remember a WildEarth ranger talking against the popular belief of Mr.T and KT having a special bond, because according to him the biggest fights for mating rights he has ever seen were between the 2, describing that they'd beat the absolute daylights out of each other much more serious than Tinyo and Mfumo.
The Mbiris are also interesting, from what I've seen they might be the duo that splits the most, no surprising they've been caught so many times. They love working alone and we have tons of footage and reports of them doing stuff alone. There are also not lots of footage of them bonding and grooming one another, not more than the usual at least.
I think the bond may be a bigger help regarding teamplay during a clash, if the bond is strong they may know better when the other will want to charge or retreat, or the right moment to turn back to face the enemy, etc.
I think lions like Gijima, PCM, Ndhzenga duo, S.Avoca and Majingilane of old times, on top of having other qualities and strengths, are example of males with particularly great teamplay, while Mbiri and Mlowathi, while yeah having good teamplay, relied more on brute strength and individual confidence.
It's part of the reason why I think Mapogo and Mbiri were caught so many times, and why maybe LM Gijima, despite his reckless behavior, hasn't, he still has insane teamplay with his brother.

Ye I think it’s a mixture of both, lions have seen too much from such a young age to not have any case of fear, no matter what that fear may come from. So when a lion often splits, is it mostly down to supreme confidence in themselves, ofcourse, but also down to the belief that their brother / partner is nearby and willing to come at a moments notice.
And in the example of if a lion would come back to save their brother, I also think confidence is the main factor, that’s what stops the male from running away instantly, but the overall bond is the deciding factor. Mr T and Kinky did beat the hell out of each other, but that’s why it worked as u also mentioned, and I genuinely believe that is the case with majority of lions. It’s very hard to find partners who are so different in terms of temperament, Ross males may be the best example, but when it was time, they had each others backs. Olobor and Lorkulup were also very different to one another, albeit they didn’t spend as much time together as the lions above. Lions so different never seem to work permanently.
I mean there was even an old rumour that when Ndzengas started pressuring N.Avocas, DM joined his two brothers to chase them off. Even if that wasn’t true, he joined up with Mohawk just before his death after years of properly being around him. These bonds are unlike anything I’ve personally seen with humans, or any other animals, and that’s definitely a reason we see cases like S.BDMs and it’s such a shock to us.
