Is there any evidence of that, or just a rumor?
Indeed there are evidence and photos when the Mantimahle coalition caught the Sparta male and a few days later he was found dead by Eckson Sithole.

The two Mantimahle boys who were spotted on KK in December 2016, the 2th Mantimahle also named as (Honest face) and the 3th Mantimahle also called (Orange mane) are most likely the ones who caught and killed to the young Sparta/eyrefield male at Kirkman's Kamp

I remember how shocked people were when the news came out. The Sparta Males were really unlucky.
The Sparta/Eyrefield males were very brave and aggressive boys like the Charleston males they were with full of confidence and also almost in his prime,but sadly they were playing with fire, The Mantimahle boys had a lot of experience at that time and plus were much bigger.

Singita:" The Shishangaan Males are presently a coalition of three adult male lions. The oldest of them, referred to as Xihamham, or the “Grumpy Male”, has the most developed mane of the three and has been known to associate with the Mananga Pride and the Mountain Pride.
They are fairly advanced in age for lions, at roughly 11 to 15 years old, and have been seen less and less frequently together in recent times.
