Captive Lion and Tiger weights

(05-10-2014, 09:29 PM)'Siegfried' Wrote: The weights of captive cats in captivity are subject to a few factors.  Many big cats in captivity are overfed in an attempt to improve docility.  A hungry big cat is no doubt a more dangerous one, so keepers will sometimes just try to keep them fat and happy. The neutering of animals often plays a role in an animal's weight as well, whether wild or domestic.  While it is seen to a lesser extent in neutered females, it is more pronounced in male animals that have been neutered.  It seems male big cats in captivity (and male cats in general) are particularly susceptible to obesity when neutered.  That is, with the exception of male lions.  Most male lions in captivity are routinely given vasectomies as opposed to the more effective method of castration.  Vasectomies are performed despite their lesser effectiveness (and greater expense) so that the male lion does not lose its mane.  You will occasionally see a castrated and thereby maneless lion.  Most of the castrated lions that I've seen tend to support this, as they have been obese too.  There are however always exceptions.

it's on sweedish, but I'll translate: our male lion Kaya was put down a while ago, due to age related deseases, he then weighed 191,5 kg. we don't know he's length.

He looks to be in his prime, not skinny at all, he's a great looking lion.

Jill Carnegie (Board of directors/President and founder) of Valley of the Kings Sanctuary

"The biggest cat we ever had was our Liger. Nook. He weighed 1,165 lbs when he was 3 yrs old.

A tiger we have now, Kubwa was weighed 2 yrs ago at 950 lbs."

Here is also an article below which mentions Kubwa. The article states him as 1000 lbs, but Jill told me he is actually 950 lbs. With a picture of him below

2 years old and 950lbs....
Not sure I believe that, unless he's a super fat cat.

She sounded pretty legit. The tiger was not two years old however, she said it was weighed two years ago. So it was an adult. Check out the size of some of them at this sanctuary, they are pretty impressive.

My mistake, I misread.
I was like... "2 years old and 900lbs!"
haha

Definitely impressive Tigers but big cats are impressive. It's hard for me to determine one being more or less impressive when compared to humans since men and cats all come in different shapes and sizes.

Either way, Nice find and thanks for sharing.

Liver, 3600 g, was subcapsularly congested, fibrinous membranes qn the diaphragmatic surface, blood content increased on cut surfaces, and congested parenchyma. Mucous membrane of cholecyst was congested. Pancreas weighed 120 g. Mesenterium was congested and some of mesenteric lymph nodes showed cyst-formation. Congested medulla of suprarenal glands and thin cortex. Kidneys weighed 450 g respectively, thick and fibrous capsules, subcapsular blood vessels ramiformly congested, elastic consistensy, and glomerular hyperemia on cut surfaces. Renal pelvis in normal. Lungs were rich in air content, pleura in normal, slight anthracosis of parenchyma, small amount of reddish viscid mucus in bronchial. lumina, and pulmonary arteries contained liquid blood. Pulmonary hilus lymph nodes were thumbhead-size and slightly anthracotic. Tongue showed hyperemia on the mucosa of its root. Tonsils in normal. Laryngo-pharyngeal mucous membranes congested. The brain, weighed 200 g, had marked macroscopical changes. The lateral ventricles dilated with increased transparent cerebrospinal fluid. Multiple small focal lesions could be observed by making many frontal cut surfaces at about 5 mm intervals after formalin fixation. The foci were yellowish-brown or reddish-brown in colour, more indurative than the peripheral normal tissue and their size ranged from that of poppy seed to rice grain, and sometimes showed the appearance of ring hemorrhage. The foci were almost always clearly demarcated, mainly distributed in subcortical white matter or inner layer of cortex of cerebral hemispheres, and were found diffusely in the area from frontal to occipital lobe and also in hypothalamus, but no lesions confirmed in midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata and cerebellum. Total number of the foci was more than twenty. The foci were more densely found in the dorsal part than the ventral."

Big Care for Big Cats

Annie Marcum's day starts early at Potter Park Zoo. The keeper for the big cats begins at 8 a.m. with a visual check of the animals in her care to ensure they are behaving normally.

*This image is copyright of its original author

Working with the lions, tigers and the snow leopard for 10 years, Annie has gotten to know each of their personalities. Observing the animals is one of the most important parts of a keeper's job. They know the animals' behavior thoroughly and are best able to detect any issues that may need to be addressed.
"You develop a relationship with them," said Annie. "There are differences between the species, but the individual animals are unique."
Next it is feeding time. Dakota, Potter Park Zoo's nine-year-old male African lion weighing 350 lbs, eats seven pounds of meat each day. Each cat's diet is determined by their weight and caloric requirements, and is designed to ensure they maintain a healthy body condition.

Dead tiger to be stuffed, put on display at Honduran zoo

Tegucigalpa, Feb 2 (IANS/EFE) A Bengal tiger donated by a Mexican circus to the Tegucigalpa zoo last year was put down after sustaining a hip injury. It will now be stuffed and placed on display at the zoo, Honduran media reported Wednesday.
Sultan, who was 16 and weighed about 230 kg, was donated to the zoo in April 2011 by the Renato Circus and had become a star attraction.
The tiger was given to the zoo after it sustained injuries in a fight with another tiger, leading its owners to believe it might be crippled, the Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat said.
The tiger was injured during a tour of Honduras and the circus decided to donate him to the zoo in the Central American country's capital.
Sultan was treated extensively and recovered fully, but he reinjured himself about a month ago, veterinarian Diana Echeverria said.
The tiger was euthanized Tuesday to end his pain and suffering.
Sultan will be stuffed and placed on display at the zoo, officials said.

Bowmanville Zoo three Tigers Jonas, Robbie, and Butch email confirmation

14 year old tiger named Robbie confirmed weighing 525 lbs. This is an email I got in 2013. But they had another tiger which died in 2012, named Jonas also, 529 lb. The other Tiger named Butch which weighed 350 lb was a sub-adult.

Tigers at the Bowmanville Zoo Bowmanville Tigers have had many starring roles. Most recently, Jonas starred in the Life of Pi. He was chosen to play ‘Richard Parker’ for the movie because he was the most reliable, well trained tiger in the world, able to work with the actor in the confined space of a life boat. Jonas had a great time on set and spent his afternoons lounging with his trainer under palm trees in the Tiawanese sunshine when not on camera!

In 2010, Jonas was kidnapped in a truck stolen while transporting him back to the zoo. The search for him made international headlines. Fortunately he was recovered home safely. Find out more here. Robbie, a twelve year old male Bengal tiger, has been in numerous TV roles. He starred along with Billy the white tiger in the TV series ANIMPORPHS. Butch our younger three year old Siberian Tiger lives with his two young lion buddies. They are all still youngsters, but as adults he will be the biggest!

Jonas the tiger on the other hand. Another tiger they used to have is said to weigh 240 kg (529 lb)

“He was very young when we got him. About eight kilograms and he was still drinking from a bottle,” recalls Hackenberger.

By the time Jonas was full-grown and weighing in at 240 kilograms, he was “unusually” sociable for a male tiger, even a neutered one.

Dirk could lead him around on a leash.
“If you put a tiger on a leash, you need a sweet tiger. And that’s what we had . . . Tigers are generally very aggressive animals.

WAR - International Asia & Australia

VLADIVOSTOK - Russian Tiger Update: Good news, with the help of the team funded by TigerTime the Amur tiger spotted near Vladivostok this week has been safely captured. It is now in the Centre for rehabilitation and reintroduction of tigers and other rare animals (pro “Center TIGER”) in the village of Alekseevka.
The TigerTime funded team assisted the specialists of Primorsky Hunting Management Department to find a tiger by providing a quadcopter. Unfortunately, rich foliage made it impossible to spot the tiger from the air but the use of thermal observation devices soon helped locate the big cat.
Weighing about 120 kg, the tiger is approximately 1.5 years. Experts are now trying to find out whether it is a wild or released captive tiger and why it has roamed so close to the city.
We'll bring you more news about the tiger as soon as we have it.

Paradise Wildlife Park

Peter & Rocky a truly special friendship!
“Rocky” our Amur Tiger has been an integral personality at Paradise Wildlife Park. He celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday and is very special to the family run wildlife park, having been hand reared by park owner Peter Sampson & Rachael. Rocky arrived when he was just 10 days old and was so small he could fit in the palm of Peters hand and weighed less than 1kilogram. (Rocky now weighs 190 kilograms).
During the younger years of his life, Rocky stayed at home with Peter and also members of the parks keeper team in the evenings, building incredible bonds with them. He was regularly walked and used for photo experiences with public due to being so friendly.
Even though no one has been in with Rocky since he reached full size, he is still an incredibly friendly big cat, that public love to see and also hand feed as part of Paradise’s ‘Feed A Big Cat’ experience. His popularity is unparalleled and his personality for being the big friendly tiger, mainly thanks to his bond with Peter throughout his life has helped to raise funds to help Tigers in the wild, around the world with Paradise being the first zoo in Europe to receive a double platinum award for funds raised for 21st Century Tiger.
He’s a truly special cat that is loved and adored by all that see him, especially by his old friend Peter!

My best friend is 178kg Bengal TIGER
Abdullah Sholeh of Malang, Indonesia is an Islamic student who has become best friend and a full-time nanny to the tiger. Mulan's owner, Noer Muhammad Sholeh, 51, asked Abdullah to take care of the tiger when it was a 3-month-old cub at Dilem Village, Kepanjen District, Malang, East Java. Abdullah Sholeh regularly sleeps, plays and fights with the huge tiger. The pair are so inseparable, he often shuns his own bed to sleep alongside the big cat in her enclosure. Mulan now weighs 178 kg, is three meters long including the tail and one meter high. For security reasons, they have had to install metal bars to separate them when they are together in the enclosure. Mulan is fed 6kg of chicken or goat meat twice a day.

Delphos Animal Hospital
Dr. Bonnie met a "new patient" while working at the Van Wert County Fair recently. This 3 year old male, white Bengal Tiger named "Kadar" weighs in at about 375 pounds and he had a sore on his chin that needed attention. Antibiotics were in order so he was treated with Amoxicillin-laced chicken fed with special "dosing tongs" to put him on-the-mend.

Kevin Richardson's lions (wild/captive)

I asked Kevin Richardson about white vs tawny lions. As you may have known, Aslan a white lion recently had a tooth operation and he was weighed.

Here is her response (employee in the program, she responds to his contact me email link)

"
Thank you for your interest shown in our lions.

Aslan’s operation was a success thank you and I am sure he is in a lot less pain having had his teeth repaired.

They were on average between 190 kg and heaviest if I recall was 210 kg.

No not really difference in the tawny vs white

Best Wishes,
Mandy"
