@Spalea  actually it's reverse. India once is lion country ancestor to modern lion subspecies, then to both the lion and wanhesian tiger.

Both gone extinction after that. Asiatic lion came recently in early holocene and then Bengal tiger together with Asian Lion. So over all in both of the times, lions came first. India is haven for both of them coz obviously it is once a part of Gondwanaland which is rich with grassy and dry environment with, then after collision with Eurasia, south east Asian jungles and forests too spread across India, the thing that favoured to give this climate is the Himalayas favored the flourishing of forest from east Asia but many areas of India still were plenty with savanna. So India is a mixed environment favoring both animals.

@Sanju :

About #728: Very happy to read that from you (because you're Indian). In Europa in the people's mind the tiger is the symbol of India, most people here don't know that there are some asiatic lions. And I seriously believe that inside India traditions and customs tigers were the only one most venerated animal of the country. I know that lion is a very emblematic animal too, at any rate in Europa, but I don't know if the appellation "King of the animals" is an universal one, or just specific to the occidental culture.

And you're right, after the continental plates, India became a privileged place as concerns the fauna.

Yes. Sad NeutralGarrr..

Quote:I don't know if the appellation "King of the animals" is an universal one, or just specific to the occidental culture.

@Spalea No it ain't universal. It's specific to region and culture. In India, both are called "Vanraj" or King of the wild or Jungle and names are overlapping too are same "Shir" though both can be specified in their particular names too that is "Bhag" for tiger, "Babbar Sher" for Lion.

where as in other east Asian and South east Asian Countries, Tiger has that possession unanimously in culture except some like Singapore and Lanka. Mainly, China. In the standard Mandarin (official language of China) character/word "王" (literal meaning "the king") is displayed on its forehead, but also because it is the symbol of bravery and power.

So yeah, it depends on the region, culture. In India, both are two eyes for us. Like in @Rishi Avatar or profile pic. But sadly, the situation is changing as the lions are proceeding to the edge and slipping away from hands.

Both are kings (lion's mane, tiger's sign) and equal status in Indian culture and devotional or have divine importance related to Gods.

Catch the irony here that the Chinese worship tiger and dragon in their culture but still they are the No.1 threat for tigers around the world. lol. coz the belief which gave them that Tiger is symbol of bravery and power of a king made them to start another disbelief that any body part from that strongest and powerful creation of God can cure their ailments. Lol. India can't give protection for tigers forever, they should kill the head of the snake to save tigers, i.e.., the disbelief among the Chinese by conducting mass awareness campaigns and programmes among them.

The incident happened in Gir Somnath in which lions have killed more than 70 goats but one sheep
RAJKOT, Gir Somnath, Navgujarat Time: The pride of five lions killed "66" goats and one sheep in Dari village here of Veraval taluka in Gir Somnath district on Sunday "single" night shocked . The incident has created panic/havoc/terror in the village among the villagers about the safety of their livestock. (LOL, who said Lion-Human Coexistence? this is what happens when mega predators live in cities and villages, they get bolder and bolder in human presence. It is high time, that Gujarat govt should give back the place where they belong that is forest and grasslands.)

In general, living in areas near wildlife habitats cases of attacks on humans and livestock by animals occur. Wild animals come to human habitation in search of prey. And they are hunting what they see. The incident happened in Gir Somnath. In which lions have killed 70 goats but one sheep. After which the flurry of the villagers spread. At the same time, the Forest Department officials were also informed about the situation running. (Dinesh Solanki, Gir Somnath)

According to the information, a group of lions came in search of hunting on Sunday night in Dari village of Girsomnath district. The Lion mob had penetrated into the sprawling and circling goats where the hideous goats were attacked.

Thus the lions have hunted more than 70 goats after one by one.

The owner of the goats woke up and the villagers gathered together.

Due to the lions attack of the lions, the fears spread among the villagers. And the forest department was informed about this.

(I think those lions have lost it, they might be mad or attacked by rabies, lol. no problem in that but for those bunch of 5 lions, 2 sheep/goat are enough for the night, but they killed 70-80 of them at once. coz they are mad or taking revenge for not letting them to kuno and killing them in gir. lol, just joking).
Now the shepherd must be really angry, mad and pissed off coz (even given compensation), it is a huge economic loss and losing his beloved animals, for just nothing to some mad animals or predators, and to survival of his "family". I think he may poach/kill/poison those lions. lol.

@Sanju :

About #728: Thanks a lot for your explanations ! Having worked for a month at Kuala Lumpur and by way of Singapore, a long time ago (1989...), I was able to verify that the emblem of Singapore was a lion, whereas the tiger was venerated everywhere in Malaysia.

And, agree with you, through one of these cruel ironies, paradoxes, whose the human being is the only one to have, all that is deified is slaughtered at the same time...

And, as you say, we have to destroy this disbelief among the chinese people, but I remember a popular expression here, "when an idea is implanted inside the man's mind, no one army can take it away from it", power of a prejudice... But, of course, we must try to eradicate it !

@Sanju :

About #731: such accidents like this one can only happen with domestic and clustered animals. They are panicking, and their fear is exciting the predators' instinct. Normally any prey they hunt in the wild is difficult to catch, and once a prey is caught, the other are flying away as fast as they can. Here, the domestic animals are clustered and jammed. And so easily killed (you cannot compare the domestic goat's vigour with an antelope's or gazelle's one) ! So, the lions used this situation.

Read again some ancient accounts, when farmers settled in Africa. Some lions killed 50 cows, ostrichs and so on (C.A.W. Guggisberg's book). Same thing between wolves and sheep. This is a natural reaction. Of course the breeders aren't happy...

Here some sources from C.A.W. Guggisberg:

https://ntz.info/gen/b00096.html#id02985

I have the book "Simba, the life of the lion" in the french version. If it can interest you, there are very numerous accounts of domestic animals clustered and slaughtered...

Actually that incorrect. This happened from time to time, the last i can remember was 5 lions, maybe these very ones, breaking into a gow-shala (cow-shelter) & killing 15 in less than an hour.

Lion seems to sub adult male running into laundry of that house in the backyard and dogs of that house/stray ones are barking relentlessly at the beast.

Panic grips Indian village invaded by a wild lion for the first time ever

Description
A village in western India's Gujarat was thrown into chaos after a huge rogue lion charged through the streets this morning (February 12).

The small village of Madhavpur Ghed in Porbander district, Gujarat state had never seen a wild lion enter the boundaries of the community before, causing the villagers to scatter as the powerful feline sprinted past a busy street.

Panic Grips as Lion enters village first time making Villagers flee in India.

First time lion sighted in the madhavpur ghed villages in porbander district making people worry as it passed from the street of the villages.

LOL for Lion-People Coexistence.

Lioness charges through a crowd of residents in Gujarat’s Porbandar. Two persons were reportedly injured in the incident.The animal seems to be making her way out of human habitation. Experts say that overcrowding of Lions in Gir is resulting in frequent man-animal conflicts in the area, Gir National Park currently houses over 6000 (600 I think, wrong description) Asiatic lions.

Chill out!
They didn't sound very "panicked"... Bit fear is useful though, especially with a young male lost in a settlement. There could have been casualties.

So, if the town was visited by lions for the first time, then Madhavpur Ghed should be among the western limit of their distribution in Kathiawar. Nice...

BTW, can you please not copy-paste the same news from many sources? Pick the best one, or best parts of all!
I just read same news about dead goats 3 times. Don't know
Noone should have to read the same news 3 times.
