A lion resting in the shade of his mistress goddess or deity, whose vahan he is.
(Almost every deity in Hinduism has a vahan, which is like a familiar to him/her.)

@Rishi

I have to say that the asiatic lions without belly fold loook much better.
Also wishing the gujarati gov to be less stubborn about letting them claim more of their historic range.

Very true. They look very beautiful without that fold coz they look like old or aged giving an appearance of weaklings with that loose extra hanging skin. It is because mammals with loose and wrinkled skin are perceived as old ones in brain on first impression.

Though weak looking is just about appearance but they are very powerful in reality.

Heavily agree about increasing their historic range not only lion but every other animal should be expanded in possible biomes of their range with positive will.

Found some fascinating stuff while researching Indian temple architecture...

Sculpture of an elephant with lions in Papanatha Temple built around 740 A.D., at Pattadakal, Karnataka, India.
Chalukya era, they ruled from Western Madhya Pradesh in the north to Karnataka in the South.

That crossed-eye & overarched spine deformity is a clear sign of inbreeding. Older generation of captive lions were severely messed up genetically.

Thankfully, I've never seen this in wild lions.
