There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Interesting info, Wolverine. Could you post a copy in the tiger extinction thread?

I thought I saw a bit of politics in your post. As animals should feature in this forum, I propose to keep posts, politicswise, as neutral as possible. That, however, doesn't mean we couldn't discuss politics. If interested, we could give it a try in the conservation section (in the thread 'Conservation, decisions and politics').

An Amur leopard, a Siberian tiger, a lynx and an Amur leopard cat have got caught in the lens of trail cameras fixed in the same area of the "Land of the Leopard". For the first time in the period of photomonitoring all these four species inhabiting the most famous feline territory of the country were noticed on the same trail.

Behind the creation of national park "Land of the Leopard" as long as I know stay Sergey Ivanov - former Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office and the third most powerful man in Russia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Ivanov

During his early years of diplomatic career he accidently met a leopard in Eastern Africa (Kenya) and was so impressed that became a big fan of that animal. Sergey Ivanov did almost all burocratic work for the creation of that national park and was so powerful that even instructed Russian army to stop any military exercises in 30 km radius of the park in order to not worry the wild animals. Unfortunately a few years ago Sergey Ivanov lost tragicaly his son in car accident and withdrow from big politics.

Concerning Vladimir Putin himself he is more interested in tigers. Putin is no doubt a dictator and destroyed democracy in Russia. But he no doubt has some merits for the conservation of tigers in Russia. He is the first Russian ruller who personally made 2-3 interactions with Amur tigers traveling in the their remote wild forests. Here Putin release into the wild young Amur tigers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaVl6zcyA9I

I don't say that Putin love tigers because he probably love only power but probably he feel some limited sympathy and interest toward them as long as its possible to any politician. There are rumors that a decade ago he called all regional governors and people with power in Russian Far East in joined meeting. "I want from you tigers to be well protected, want their numbers increasing and I want results - said boldly the Big Bad Uncle - and hit the table with his fist. Since then the regional leaders from Russian Far East start to afraid for their positions, because any fail in protecting Amur tigers could lead to dismissal of the governors of Primorskii or Habarovski region. The number and the territory of protected arias in Ussuriland for last 17 years increased tree fold. Of course nobody can stop completely the poaching of tigers because the Chinese black market is too big temptation for every hunter and is too close.

That fear from Putin has also his negative sides. Trying to convince the boss that number of tigers is increasing local Russian governmental institutions maybe artificially boost the real number of Amur tigers hiding the real numbers. So, concerning tiger numbers is better to believe to independent non-governmental organisations and take with some doubt official data. But in general situation with Amur tigers in not too bad.
This tiger sub-specie probably has the best prospects in the future because its the only one existing in the territories where the human populations is decreasing. Russia is currently entering a second more harsh phase of its demographic crisis because now in birth circle are entering very limited and not numerous generation of women born in chaotic 90-s.
Wolverine,
I do not like to talk about politics in an animal forum, but I am forced this time.
Vldimir Putin really likes the tiger. This is a fact. Even Hillary Clinton related about it in  her book " Hard choices : a memoir ". Putin is also doing good things to protect the polar bear and Lake Baikal, for example. Do you really believe that there are many western leaders who would order an alternative route of a pipeline just for ecological reasons  ?
I know that the West simply hates Russia, in general, and Putiin in particular, certainly because Russia is not an american poodle dog and has enormous natural resources that the West can not get them by force, like in Iraq and Libya : a war against the mighty russian power would mean the end of life on Earth. It is clear that Russia is doing a good job to save tigers.
It is specially interesting that you, from Canada, a country that loves so much killing seals, do not want to recognize russian efforts to protect wildlife.
If we still have wild tigers nowadays it is because India, Nepal, Bhutan and Russia protect them, despite the big pressure from poachers.
I am absolutely convinced  that in any western country ( and my country, Brazil, also belongs to West ) wild tigers would be already extinct or very near extinction.  Do not forget that Great Britain committed  crimes not only against India´s people but also against India´s wildlife: tigers ,specially, suffered, a lot: just look at the numbers before and after the british left India.
By the way, try to visit Russia someday, specially St Petersburg, named the best tourist destination in Europe for the second time since 2015.

"We have not been telling the media about Vladik's life for a long time, first of all, because we were concerned about his safety. Maybe it is a bit of overstatement, but now, when he overcame the milestone, we can remove the veil of secrecy. During his long journey Vladik regularly hunted ungulate animals, and even Himalayan bears – there were three cases! He gave us quite a scare when he approached the village of Yasnoe near the airport. But the tiger made the right choice and found the right way, bypassing Vladivostok. The joint group even got to see the tiger, finding him with the help of the radio signal. Well, then he crossed the difficult barrier of the Trans-Siberian highway and Vladivostok-Khabarovsk highway and reached the south-west, thereby confirming the connection between two sections of the tiger range, proved in the middle of the twentieth century - Sikhote-Alin and the south-west of Primorye. Vladik looks healthy and well-fed. He showed a normal reaction to cars and humans. We still don’t know where the predator is heading but time will show," – Director General of the Amur Tiger Center Sergei Aramilev commented.

After exploring the south-west of Primorsky Krai and the Kedrovka river basin, Vladik the tiger made a 180 degree turn and went back to the central part of Sikhote-Alin. http://amur-tiger.ru/en/press_center/news/915/
