Sitara/Star/T-28 Ranthambore

Age - 13-14 yrs old
Found dead - 20th March 2018
Total length = 303 cm
Head-Body length = 207 cm
Shoulder height = 127 cm
Weight = 260 kg
Body condition = severely dehydrated

According to vet, he had eaten a lot of meat which caused gastric torsion in his upper cardiac region.

From the pic, how much would you estimate for him to have eaten?

Just for comparison between him and MB2 who was 195kg at 2.4 yrs old

Both no doubt would be over the curves so assuming all things equal T28 was a little larger than MB2.

A good friend is in contact with an official from ranthambore who keeps a record of tiger captures/tiger dead bodies.

Their age would create a difference as well. Star's muscles would be denser since they were mature.

I forgot to add that when Star died he was severely dehydrated (as the person told). Also he was really thin compared to start-mid of 2010s probably because of his age and was taking a beating from heavy competition.

His age quoted was wrong, he was 11 apparently. And while old age can affect some it’s not going to be a massive difference and certainly won’t affect body dimensions.
If the animal is gorged like that as well it won’t matter the age, undigested food weighs the same no matter the age of the cat. And unfortunately a 2nd source is lacking verification.
Not saying they’re lying, it’s always interesting to have that kind of data but we’d need a little more details.

That's fine, I'd be more curious who actually said it and in what context.

T28 Sitara's post mortem report and some information about Panna tigers

Panna tigers

Interesting thing to notice: The combination used on Panna tigers since 2012 is xylazine and ketamine. Xylazine is an effective sedative analgesic that induces vomiting in cats particularly when administered through subcutaneous or intramuscular routes. This same mixture has been used in recent tiger tranquilizations as well, like in Maharashtra ( was used on tigers Gabbar and Jai).

Good stuff, it mentions the weight as an approximate, do you know if he was for sure weighed or just estimated?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hJT8SAAwgA MT3 too died in the same period , they measured mt3 243kg and 192kg(after death due to sickness) using spring scale as seen in the video . they carry scales so should have weighted it too .

I messaged a WII researcher, who actively takes part in tiger collaring ,regarding the body mass of largest male and female he's come across . Unfortunately , regarding females , he didn't have much idea but for the male , this was what he said :

"I'll check records. As far as I remember , the largest male weighed 244 kg . He was darted on a kill in Maharashtra."

Unfortunately not every capture is the same and scales aren't always present. Definitely possible that he was weighed but the writing of "estimated" should give some pause.
That being said, T28 was the largest male in Ranthambore for some time, at least quoted by many as such. I know Fetah was said to be bulkier but not as large in frame and Ustaad was similar in size to them. But if and that's a big "if" all things are similar between T28 and MB2, they both are very close in dimensions to one another and that gives you an idea of just how massive Umarpani is and the big boys in Kanha altogether. But again it's a huge "if" since measurements can be done differently from person to person.
