Great photo legendary. The look of a warrior that's been around the block.

Yea...............................a few times

There's very little videos of HB fighting though.  Majority of lion activity is at night under cover of darkness and thus difficult to follow, but it would be interesting to see what the results were of Majingilane and Matimba clashes when they were brushing up against each other back in the day.  Never did see much videos except for one where HB apparently caught DM alone but that's about it.  Suppose we assume the scars are from rival males though when they could just as well be from buffalo horns or scratches from coalition mates during tussles over female mating rights.

Here is a video of HB meeting up with Nsuku .... they are both around today so they must have worked it out ... wish there was more to the clip .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBR0ACWalhY

Ah yes, I remember that one.  Not sure what to make of that one.  HB looked submissive but stood his ground, Nsuku looked confused and not sure what to do.  Not surprised, HB is dark maned and very big.

According to a post Hairy Belly is apparently having problems to roar loudly and clearly. This was very evident in Leopard Hills private reserve today...
Another Matimba Slit nosed also had a similar problem in his last days in Ngala. He couldn’t roar while white face matimba roared properly.

Ginger mostly fled in the battle against Majingilane,,, Hairy Belly was mostly alone near the Majingilanes...

That Day when HB was only 200 meters away from Majingilane and Majingilane ganged up in the evening and chased him around for an hour or two but Hairy ran never never ending curcles and managed to dodge them as per londolozi..

Recently Hairy Belly again fought against the 3 Avoca’s and this fight appears to have damaged him a big time.

Legendary cause some weeks before the clash with majingilanes ginger was ganged by some coalition and received hard bites over his spine. So he was avoid a new fight. Nobody know who did it with ginger. People speculated about matshapiris or bboys but could be majingilanes too. The lions in war at that time were majingilanes and matimbas.

If you think over it, Matimba Males have absolutely no chance of establishing territory in the West. They will only last 3, 4 months max before a new coalition comes and puts them away. Or simply they will wander off and leave the area in 6 months time because old age... Old lions usually end up like this.

The Matimbas will have no problem establishing themselves in the west as long as its vacant. The area is accessible from only 1 side so whoever is in there is in a relatively safe spot and shielded away from most competition.

Looking for a little history lesson on the Matimbas. I don't seem to know much about their life, especially the northern ones since they were not in the Sabi Sands. I know there was a dominant male called Nduna, who eventually split off and stayed alone with a pride in the Kruger. I guess he disappeared a few years ago, probably died of old age or killed by rivals since one male is easy to pick off. Not sure if this info is entirely correct so would love it if someone gave further clarification.

Two of the three Northern Matimbas were Slit Nose and White Face but I don't know what the third was called. I heard all 3 are now dead but not sure if there is any documentation of that. From various sources, I have read that these northern Matimbas were part of fights that sound legendary. Apparently they defeated a coalition of 7(!) lions known as the Orpen Males, 5 males of the Giraffe coalition (any relation to the current Avoca/Giraffe coalition in Timbavati?) and the 4 Machaton Males. If I am not wrong they also killed the brothers of both Skorro and Sizanani from the Thanda Impi coalition. Is there anywhere I can find more information about these exploits? And the name of the third male and their inter-coalition dynamics would be great too.

Hairy Belly and Ginger are obviously the most well documented males and certainly have been around longer than their brothers. Are they perhaps younger or were they just better at surviving? And finally, does anyone know which pride was their natal pride?

From my limited knowledge, the third Northerm Matimba was known as Blue Eyes and also referred to as "Matimba with piercing eyes." I am not sure exactly when he died but around late 2015 or early 2016 is what I deduced from the various posts about them.

Other tid bits:
  • The coalition split around 2015 into Northern and Southern Matimbas (not sure why; pressure from BBoys?).
  • Ndhuna was last seen in December 2012.
  • Whiteface was the last surviving NM and died in 2017.
  • Slit Nosed Matimba died in 2016.
I would appreciate any correction to the above summary.

Hello Matimbalani.

Only thing I'd correct is this, mostly because I think both sets of the coalition were already in two different territories. The southern matimbas were in the northern part of the sabi sands, Djuma all of that land, that had been already left by the Majingilane.

The northern males, on the other hand, had their land much to the north into the Timbavati, at least that's the little I know of them.

Thanks for the correction, Tshokwane. I had assumed that their territories were contiguous and Ginger and HB were eventually pushed south wards. Admittedly, I have just started following the line dynamics.

Did the Avoca/Giraffe coalition kill Blue Eyed or Slit Nosed Matimba? And whatever happened to the Fig Rock male that was seen with White Face?

I think they won't have a problem either.  It would be difficult if say the birminghams sneaked down and established themselves, but the territory was vacant and the matimbas somehow managed to sneak in and entrench it.  There's only one frontier to defend.  Wheras londolozi is kind of like Germany and flanked on all sides by potential rivals.  The western sector is nicely boxed off and it's going to take someone coming in to force them out.  Possibly birminghams? chances are they are happy with what they got.  If I was a betting man, I'd say matimbas will hold out until death...but it can all change....all it takes is a lone lion to run off over excited and get mauled a la kinky tail or take on a buffalo and get horned.  There's so many variables to consider.

I think it were the selaties who split the matimbas. The selaties were dominant over the talamati pride around the time the birminghams first showed up in sabi sands. I think the area up in ngala, orpen, and timbavati has a lot of competition. The skybeds, the avoca+giraffe coalition, and other large coalitions have all had a go with the northern matimbas at one point or another, its quite remarkable that the three northern matimbas held on until 2016.

HB is actually one of the older matimbas excluding nduna, ginger is one of the younger if not the youngest matimba. The southern matimbas have probably not had to fight as often or face relentless pressure from other coalitions as much as the northern brothers, hence have survived this long.

One Birmingham Male has been spending less time on MalaMala, wondering if he is spending more time in Londolozi, and that’s where he will follow Original Mhangeni lionesses and enters west... Thats where Matimbas have to worry.. After siring cubs with Kambula, they will look for females. Still in their primes.
