I believe this has turned out to be Purple Eye’s final sighting on camera. RIP girl. You had a long struggle after your injury and was always a true fighter.

Sad news about Purple Eye. She wasn’t terribly old for a 10 year old lioness. As I understand they can live up to 14-15 years in the wild. I think she could’ve lived longer being that she was a lioness and doesn’t have the challenges of the male lions, but the wild always brings many dangers. Which means lifespan can really depend on the luck of the draw. Sounds like the injury she sustained and an illness is what ultimately did her in.
One of my favorite sightings of Purple Eye was back in 2019 when Tristian found her casually walking down the road with one of her and Amber Eye’s rambunctious cubs. Their energy was like two toddlers running about the house getting into everything. Lol. And PE was the epitome of calm I’m guessing due to her temperament and experience as a mother. It was also cool to hear Tristian speculate how lionesses know when cubs are missing and how it’s decided who goes to get them if there is a pride of lionesses with multiple cubs. It was a great sighting.
I just want to "debunk" the myth that ill or injured lions are "not allowed" to eat by other members of pride or males, thats wrong interpretation.
Lions "dinner manners" is all about competition and strenght. Strongest members, usually males, are on the top, then come females and young males, then weakest members like subs, cubs and injured/ill lions, who need to fight their way to get some share.
If the size of the meal is too small and group too big, those on the bottom will be left with leftovers or nothing.
Also on many occasions males claim the kill completley, not allowing any other members to feed until they are full.
So i dont believe, that specificaly ill or injured lions are not allowed to feed, no, they are just too weak to compete.
I remember when Nsuku was on his death doors, there was a video where he was so weak that even 1 year old cubs outmuscle him on a kill, let alone adult females and males.
Plenty of animals have shown to be able to detect sickness and prefer to alienate such members. And we know lionesses are capable of having preferences in mating. So ther is already some selection going on.
So its not that unreasonable that a caughing lioness is avoided or chased off.

Sightings of this pride were scarce until the 25th . After that, they provided spectacular viewing by coming together for two family feasts.
Noteworthy sightings:
• Two females and three sub-adult males were around Gowrie Circle on the 11th .
• From the 25th to the 27th , three lionesses and seven cubs shared the remains of a zebra carcass with the two Northern Avoca males around Mlowathi Dam.
• On the 28th , 20 lions were found feeding on the remains of a buffalo bull carcass in the Maponyeleni Donga. The group consisted of four adult females, two sub-adult females, five sub-adult males and seven cubs. The Northern Avoca males were also present.
• All twenty lions were at Mlowathi Pans on the 30th .
Few images of purple eye.
She was the one who use to take responsibility of killing Buffalo by jumping on their neck.
She did what she had to do, raise the cubs, take them to independence and now she can rest in peace.
Nkuhuma subadult.
Very soon ( by next year maybe) we will need "Male lineage of avocas" group. Should we give them names like N1, N2... etc like kambulas sub boys.
