Very strange situation and according to JP, the WE guide who does the bushwalk segment at Pridelands, her mother died and she lost her status and was kicked out thereafter. No information as to why other than the death of her mother appeared to be the catalyst of that situation.

Very strange indeed. Sounds more like my understanding of typical hyena behavior. Thank you for that explanation, I do hope she either gets accepted back, or can find a lone lioness as Gingerella and Ximungwe did.

Yes.  Very sad for the little ones.  Looks like all three from the eldest litter and the K3 lioness and one from the second oldest.  The youngest litter if four, all gone

Yea, cubs to be raised succesfully, there needs to be stability, and Kambulas didn't have that in the past year or so, first with N. Avocas causing trouble, now with N'ws and by the looks of it now losing dominant males (Tinyo dead and looks like Nhenha abandon them and sticks with subadults).

Theres very slim chance that rest of this cubs will survive, without protection of dominant males and with new ones on the doorstep. But on the other hand, N'ws as fairly young males could bring much needed stability for future.

Great sighting of Nk male. Glad to see him looking well.
Credit: Omega Godi
According to Omega (after I asked him), he was by himself. Mhangeni Pride was nowhere near to him.

In later segment Tessa changed the assumption after getting better visual to these being 3 Nkuhuma lionesses. Didn't specify she meant 3 mothers (she meant just 3 of the Nkuhumas, really) but also mentioned the Nkhumas movement and stated these three seemed to be trailing the pride. Take it as what it is, I for sure can't recognize indivual lionesses let alone from such a footage in tall grass, she probably had a better visual and is likely more familiar with the individual animals (than me for sure apperance wise especially, not speaking for the whole board) so I take as a face value preemptively till we know otherwise. Either way such a shame. Good thing is if she is one with the cubs, there are two other litters of similar age so it would not be over for her cubs if she did not make it. Perhaps.

Very strange situation and according to JP, the WE guide who does the bushwalk segment at Pridelands, her mother died and she lost her status and was kicked out thereafter. No information as to why other than the death of her mother appeared to be the catalyst of that situation.

From Brent of PaintedDogTV and his Christmass Eve drive linked somewhere on this forum (Idk if it is correct but sounds plausible, probably better to discuss in Timbavati thread though) - there was a takeover and her mother was killed defending her against Sark males, who are currently dominant males over Ngati pride (her natal pride). And basically she might be accepted back once she gets in oestrus and males see her as a mating partner. Apparently when the pride is without males, there is no problem so I take it as some contacts already happened without significant hostilities. Sounds bit too optimistic perhaps, who knows.

Related - Ngati pride seems to be on Pridelands more with their cubs older as the hyena clan there is quite strong and could be an issue for a pride with smaller cubs.

It is mentioned somewhere in the second half of this (the whole video is Sark male taking his lion share of a impala kill with Ngati pride being supporting cast)

That would be tragic, but the silver lining, as you mentioned, would be her cubs still would have a chance. I hope it isn't a permanent maiming sort of injury, but it isn't looking good right now. These animals have such difficult and dangerous lives, that coupled with their incredible beauty are big reasons they are so beloved by so many.

Nhenha hasn't abandoned them, he was with them a few days ago and before that. He has been following both groups, not just 1. Apparently a young male followed him back to these ones and Nhenha was aggressive with him, not allowing him near the cubs.

Even if Nhenha isnt ready to move on. With Tinyo death and him being besieged by much stronger groups, its not going to matter much.

My point is, these 3 Kambulas and cubs are pretty much unprotected, even if Nhenha still hangs with them occasionaly, he cant do anything to protect them..

Nhenha and Kambulas are pretty much playing hide and seek atm, its not Nhenhas fault, he is outnumbered, he cant do anything yet to keep low profile between N'ws and N. Avocas and try to stick with Kambula subs.

Just today MalaMala posted that 2 N'ws recently pushed north, roaring, Nhenha was only 1 km from them, he didn't respond, yet they heard roars in distance from N. Avocas and 2 Kruger males further north.

This is smart from Nhenha, him trying to vocalise and trying to protect cubs is suicide against 4 males.

We all love Nhenha, but it is how it is, 5-6 years ago, he was doing the same thing to S. Matimbas, taking advantage of numbers game..

Nhenha still has some options, those are his sons, maybe take his chance in Singita, idk, but his time of being dominant male in this area, is pretty much coming to an end..

There is also lone Nkuchuma male not too far away, with who he could also potentially form a coalition, through he probably would have much better odds for survival if he would stick with his sons insteed.
