Marlon du Toit: " A young male lion caught in a captivating pose - eyes wide open & looking up towards the heavens.

You can add all sorted of dramatic captions & emotions to an image such as this. It’s striking as he faces you head-on & strikes a pose looking up towards the heavens. At the end of the day nearly every posture is related & linked to a form of behaviour.
What do you think this lion was doing?
Lions are very aware of vultures. Vultures will start flying as soon as it’s warm enough for hot thermals rising off the ground to carry them high into the sky. It’s a heavy bird & they need some help.
Lions will always keep eyes on vultures because an easy meal can be close by. As vultures descend on to a carcass, lions will get up & also move into the same direction. I’ve seen them walk for several kilometers in order to get to the carcass that’s been pointed out by the scavenging birds.
While lions observe vultures they’ll give you the opportunity to capture moments like this one. You can bet your top dollar on it. If you’re with lions & they up & about, and you spot some vultures overhead, get ready!"

Yes I know, I'm digging up some old accounts, but the depictions are still interesting to read.

James Tyrrell: " Two male lions battle it out for mating rights to a lioness. The noise and fury of such an encounter and the brute power of these animals has to be witnessed first hand to be truly appreciated! "

James Tyrrell: " I love the affection displayed between members of a lion coalition.

Whether “affection” is even the right word, I’m not sure, but the rubbing of heads, soft “umph” utterances that we can’t help but ascribe to tenderness, and the genuine pleasure they seem to take in each other’s company, are all so seemingly out of character for a dominant male lion that we can’t help but be drawn in.
These brothers hadn’t seen each other in 24hrs or so, but their respective roars on a freezing winter’s morning reunited them on an open clearing, where we got to see the full greeting display.
@si_smit weren’t you in this sighting? Majingis off Taylor’s River Rd/Elmon’s Kraal... "

I find it that female cubs are far more active and playfull than male cubs, currently i have 3 house cat cubs, 2 males and 1 female just like this , even smaller, female cub is far more active and playfull, always beating and bothering the males, it seems that females are just more "spicy"..

Regardless, its amazing how those 3 cubs have grown over the past few months, they are almost the size of an adult lioness :

" Last night we found a herd of buffalo in the southern section of our reserve. Because of the fading light, Tyron followed up on the herd this morning and found lion tracks on top of the buffalo tracks. As he circled around the big herd, he saw four lion heads looking out from the long grass. The lions are clearly in search of a meal but were not keen on hunting this morning but rather resting "

Very intresting interview with Sabi Sands guide on Sabi Sands coalitions (Mapogos, Majingilanes, Salatis and Matimbas) from 7:00 to 40:00.

Nice find, i skip thru it and part of 4 Majingilanes vs 5 Matimbas (prob around 2012) is rly interesting, for all those who are saying that Majingilanes never fight outnumbered..

This outnumbered bullshit comes from people that admire a coalition of 6 which had in every battle the numbers with them....Beside that they never fought a coalition over 2 members and won....
From the chat that potato post
1-Majingilane the most succesfull coalition of SS
2-Confirms the battle of Elephant plains-They found the scull of a big male lion(Rasta was gone after the fight)
3-Four Majingilane vs five Matimba
4-Five Selati chase 2 majingilane but when the other 2 brothers heard the roars they went straight to the fight without roaring(One dead Selati)
5-Majingilane werent comfortable with the vehicles etc....
6-"Its coming..."The Majingilanes are gonna come knocking one day...(Going west to Selatis area)
7-Favourite males KT and DM

Interesting chat also for the leopards!

The outnumberrd thing is true, but that's not a dig at the majingalanes. Their success came from picking their battles wisely.

1. That's if you define the criteria as siring cubs, tbh the main goal of a coalition is to secure territory and taking over prides. The prides nurture the young not the males, just a matter of definition.
2. This found a skull(identity wasn't confirmation), confirms nothing. Although I agree that's probably what happened.
3. Just roaring and enforcing territorial boundaries.

Oh don't act as ingorant as the very same pople (Majingilanes haters) you course in your comment.. When it comes to being outnumbered then we have:

1. Toulon males fought in mid 2009 by Mlovathis
2. Couple of scraps between Mlovathis and Majingilanes pre take over mentioned in interviev. Of course Majingilanes by that time weren't yet really ready for such fight, but:
a) We talk about 2vs5 which is huge numerical advantage
b) We do not talk about taking on some no names, but on aguably the most succesfull coalition in SS history
3. June 2010 and of course epic fight between fearless Mlovathis and already confident Majingilanes
4. Jully 2010 If Rasta indeed has fallen to the Majingilanes it wasn't 5vs4 (only fool could believe that (especially by that time) Majingilanes could literally destroy Mapogos in open confrontation, killing one of them), but either 2vs4 (Twins vs Majingi) or 1vs4
5. Mid 2011 - It is unknown who Mapogos fought in that time, but most likelly it was heavlly presurre on northen SS Matimba males. If not then Majingialnes. In both cases anyway numbers most likelly were on Mapogos opponents side. They must have been at least equall, but most ussualy if a coalition can provide supperior number they use it and I do not think that situation was different.
6. There was couple of fights with Salatis through 2011 and early 2012.

Also just to add to points 5 and 6 that through that time Makhuulu was already older than Majingilanes ever were and other two Mapogos even through younger they were well past their prime as well.

Moreover I would like to point out few fights with equall numbers:

1. Mlovathis vs Manyeleti males
2 Mlovathis vs Gijima males
3. Mak and PB vs KNP male. Even through theoretically it is fight with equall number, there is rather no doubts that it wasn't even fight and KNP males were clear favorite in that fight and nearly no one was expecting Mapogos to be any match for huge and in prime KNP males.
4. Makhulu vs Nhlaguleni

In the end I wish to remind that guide in interviev say that Mapogos were wenturing into Kruger and fought there other males so this list easly could be even longer if we could track their actions inside Kruger.
