The 43kg adult Caatinga male jaguar we know is dead. Weird

His name was Lampião.

He died in December last year of starvation. Disappointed

gendiedson

''Today the memory goes from the first melanistic Onça-Preta captured in the Caatinga. Unfortunately the "Lampião" is no longer alive and the situation of the jaguar from the Caatinga biome is critically endangered. If we do nothing in the short term we will lose this population...

I hope that 2020 we can start something concrete for that population.''

I'm asking Paulo to ID him.
Just remember that Adriano is a normal sized Jaguar with a very robust body but there are quite a few Jaguars that are larger than he so this boy depending on body dimensions could dwarf Adriano.

Paulo couldn't expand the pic but he's almost positive it's Balam.

This is him cleaning up after a huge Caiman kill. This is the guy who kicked Marleys/Jurus butt and is easily larger than Adriano.

Thanks a lot for the identification! @Pckts he's gotten even bigger from the recent pictures we've received, easily a 140+kg Jaguar (and I still believe Adriano was bigger than 130 kg so who really knows how big Balam is).

A side note, Paulo said that hes had cancellations for the entire season and while the Pantanal is "open," tourism is completely dead. It may be some time before it's economy comes back which is very sad. Both for us as nature lovers and for the country itself.

This is Luciana female.

She's daughter of the majestic Jeffa female and sister of Luciano male ( he is the same age as her ).

Hopefully she will pick up her mothers impressive/massive genes.

I wonder where Luciano male is.

Sossego really had some golden genes, his lineage of female daughters and granddaughters are extremely impressive jaguars, now imagine what the males probably look like. Jeffa does not play around when it comes to her musculature and girth.

I am really looking forward to see how Luciano male will look as he grows but he probably won't stay around for too long as he grows he might get kicked out by the likes of either Cotim male, M&M male, Ajó male or others. Hopefully young Luciano will stick in the area somehow haha.

I also did not forget about the brothers Grandão and Oreia as soon as I drop the post in the future on the jaguars dynamics and the other post related to this in the puma predation, maned wolf and jaguar weight thread I'll do a post just about these 2 brothers.

I heard Xangô cerrado male will have another capture coming in the future.

I would love for Jeffa to be captured and weight, she's easily above 100 kg, she looks even stockier than Troncha 110 kg female. All these new generation jaguars from Pantanal are very fascinating and impressive which is a really good sign in terms of their conservation and the ecology of their habitat.

I am not sure if you recall but I told you in the jaguar weight thread if there's one female I wanted to find out the weight in case she gets captured it would be Jeffa.

Troncha is no longer seen in a long time if I am not mistaken and we gotta recall that 110kg of hers she gave birth of just one cub after months of the capture. So non pregnant Troncha wouldn't be far bellow that size I guess.

This is young Luciano male, brother of Luciana female and son of Jeffa. Most likely Sossego's son.

Hopefully we'll see him as an adult in one of the Onças do Rio Negros captures in the future if he sticks around.
