We can tell the Nkuhuma male is taller? How? He is much closer to the camera, it's impossible to say who's taller, we can only clearly see that PCM have much more impressive frames. It always surprises me when rangers or guides who have actually seen these males, experienced their 'personalities' first hand for months or even years and have immense knowledge about the bush are questioned about their views. Camera and video angles can be incredibly hard to judge; an animal even a meter closer to the camera than another at a relatively low angle will seem bigger. Yes, I am not denying that there are succesfull males. But the thing is. That's still comparing a select few male lions against the average lioness.

Interesting bits at 3:37 and 04:54 to the end, explains why male lions sometimes mount each other. Apparently the same area of the brain is responsible for mounting and mating with a female and mounting another male to assert dominance. To go off on an unrelated topic, this kind of explains why some species display homosexual behavior. As if the wiring in the ventromedial hypothalamus is different in some individuals and they will mount and mate with other males instead of females. Very interesting stuff. |
