few months prior in May, another male was killed in Bijrani. looks like the resident male of Bijrani is killing every male he comes in contact with.

#Tiger found #dead in #Corbett, 3rd big #cat death this Year 2019..

Nainital: The body of a male tiger was found in Bijrani zone of Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) on Friday afternoon. This is the third recorded tiger death in the state this year and first in the CTR.

Preliminary reports suggest that the big cat was killed because of infighting. CTR director Rahul, who goes only by his first name, told TOI, “The tiger’s skull was broken and there were claw and teeth marks all over its body. This suggests that the animal was killed as a result of infighting. Its age was between 8 and 10 years. We have also collected samples from water holes around the spot to rule out foul play.”

He added that the big cat was cremated after conducting a post-mortem and its viscera samples have been collected for further tests as per National Tiger Conservation Authority guidelines.

I think I read somewhere that older one aged 8-10 years was the resident male of Bijrani, who got killed & replaced. Same new male might have injured this one too.

It can’t be Sambha, Sambha is from Dhikala zone. Bijrani is ruled by this male.

@Rishi

that could very well be true, he seems young and ferocious. linked to two deaths now. both males killed in a similar fashion, severe head injuries in both the fights.

here is Luma, the Queen of Bijrani. she’s also the daughter of Sharmili tigress.

The end of an era

Sambha being rescued by Corbett Tiger reserve  and being sent to a Zoo.

Apparently he killed two people before Corbett forest department decided to shift him to a Zoo, old age really caught up to him.

Corbett tigers, for sure are extra ferocious than other tiger groups. May be because at one point of time, they were the biggest tigers.

I think that all just depends on the individual, aggression isn’t linked to a specific group. generally tigers that aren’t used to human presence tend to be aggressive when confronted. every tiger reserve has their fair share of personalities, Charger of Bandhavgarh earned his name from charging at vehicles. Shivaji of Kolsa, T42 (Fateh) of Ranthambore and the list goes on. also regarding the size, they don’t have the prey base that Kaziranga or Dudhwa has to offer but they are very close in that department and quite honestly, Sathiana male, Jhirna male, Rajaji Male, KZT083, KZT023, KZT024, KZT085, Gulrighat and Scissor male. I feel like they are all pretty close.

Gulrighat

I spoke to a good friend of mine from Wildlife Institute of India recently and he told me, despite being one of the largest tiger he has ever seen. he was adamant that Kauvia Ghatia and Sathiana male were both bigger than he is, on the same note, Charger, Gulrighat, Chaltuwa male, S male and all the others are comparable.

here is a few of them

again not sure who this male is, what a beast.

I also asked him how the Kanha males compared, he laughed and said he didn’t want to be a part of that discussion. then i asked if Umarpani compared to any of the males seen by him and he was adamant, all of the Dudhwa males are bigger than Umarpani by a long shot.

I have little doubt that these guys are in a different class, you can see it in images and videos, they are far more robust than any other Tigers in my opinion.
Body frame I can't imagine being too different but body density is unmatched. I wish I could see more Kaziranga Males but from what I've seen, I still don't think even they are in these guys class.

I asked some who had seen Umarpani and the Gulrighat Male about their size comparison and he said the following...

"I just saw Gulrighat Male three days back and I have seen Umarpani as well. I will not comment on who is bigger (I know this debate is on for sometime now), but I can say with conviction that the argument that Kanha tigers are biggest may need to be revisited. Dudhwa/ Terai tigers are humongous and Gulrighat is not the biggest among Terai tigers. I am told by locals there that Sathiana male is bigger than Gulrighat male. My next trip will focus on Sathiana who gives sightings once in two months!!!"

Here is Kshitij Saxena‎ when I asked him how Gulrighat compared to Umarpani, he has seen both.
I posted my original post as well.

I am with you on that @Pckts

the way it stands, both have similar prey option available to them. again same type of forest cover, tall grass and a perfect habitat. I feel like both groups rival each other more than any other group. personally if i had to choose, i would be in favor of Dudhwa over Kaziranga just because of that verified weight by the Wildlife Institute of India. however, i still can’t ignore the giants i have seen from Kaziranga. furthermore i think if a male from Kaziranga gets tagged, that would explain a lot of things.
