MALAMALA TODAY: May 15th. 5 lion sightings: 3 large males (Mantimahle) moved north through the southern half of our property before settling down in eastern Flockfield. The Eyrefield pride were viewed in southwestern Charleston- this pride has suffered another blow as the aforementioned male collation of 5 killed the oldest male cub. The Marthly pride were seen at Paraffin Drift. 1 of the Matshapiri males was moving west just north of Rattray's Camp. 1 of the young Sand River males was viewed near Flat Rocks. 3 leopards: the Sibuye female killed an impala in the Nontsemeni Donga. A male known by our neighbours as the Mahlatini male was found with a bushbuck kill as well as an impala kill in southwestern Charleston. The West Street male was also viewed in the south. Scattered elephant and buffalo bull sightings were recorded today as well as many hyenas. Photo of the Mantimahle males by ranger Johannes D Welman @johannesdwelman_photo

The Mantimahle males are back in Lion Sands! In today’s blog (link in bio) Field Guide JP Marx recounts how he came across this powerful coalition on foot, and shares what happened when the males came together with the Sand River females on a buffalo carcass.

During our stay at the Kirkman's Kamp on the Sabi Sand Reserve in the Kruger, we were very lucky to see four male lions together. Our ranger told us that these guys are lords of most of the western Kruger, overseeing four or five different prides, and are only very occasional visitors to the Sabi Sand Reserve. Although they behave here like four kittens, they are ruthless killers. To get to their position of dominance, Josh, our ranger, reckoned that between them, they had probably killed over 100 other lions - competing males, recalcitrant females, and cubs fathered by other males in prides they have taken over. And yet, they can behave like this. We spent a wonderful 45 minutes watching them.

Note: I doubt much that the Mantimahle have killed around 100 lions, also sound a bit far-fetched,I not judging the statement of the ranger, but IDK!

One of the famous Mantimahle males posing beautifully early morning in the road. There is not a better feeling then coming around a corner and finding one or even more than one big male lion in the road!
