The Styx pride cannot catch a break.

Receiving sad news this morning that 5-6 males entered southern Sabi sands (pressumed to be Nkuhulus) and attacked the pride.

Styx has lost a member.   I believe a sub.

Any time they get a little reprieve, tragedy strikes.   Damn.

Sorry for the graphic photo

They got "screwed" over by Ndhzengas abandoning them for Kambulas , just as they where in 2018 by Bboys, almost exact situation..

100%.   Totally agree.   Sad to see cause they had such great numbers under the N’waswitshaka.  But they got greedy.   Left them.

Its not greed, its normal behavior for coalition with such big numbers, there was no females to mate with in Styx pride anymore, so they took over new territory with new females.

Yeah, but they didn't stay with them until their cubs were old enough to take for themselves. They abandoned around 6 months too early. Even so, there are 4 N’waswitshaka males, they could have stayed with BOTH Kambula pride and Styx pride. The 4 Majinglane males divided their time between their prides, like the Othawa pride and the Tsalala pride when there are no more females to mate with. They protected their prides and their offsprings.

Possibly they sensed that (after tinyo departure) only one Birmingham male is there with 11 adult/ almost adult female. So they can chase him off and acquire the such a big pride. It was a cake walk for them and they took the full advantage of it.

Majingilane were legendary and unparalleled.
They arguebly hold the world record of maximum number of sons reach adulthood ( 4 yrs age) in wild with so many prides.
Starting from fourway pride to windmill, Styx, Sparta, tsalala, mhangeni, othawa etc 4 brothers had performed their paternal duty in excellent manner.

Males "caring" about their offspring and "protecting" them is a myth.

Majingilanes also abandoned Tsalala,Sparta, Styx and Fourways prides before their offspring reached maturity.. Reason is pretty much the same..

Males and coalitions will not stay and "protect" / " raise" their offspring if they have opportunity to mate with females in another pride.

N. Avocas would did the same in 2021 if they managed to beat Bboys and Ndhzengas didn't come.

Males/coalitions who stay with the same pride for more then 2/3 years dont have other available prides near by, they are either too weak in numbers or too old to have such ambitious.

There is no prime coalition, with big numbers who will stay with certain pride for multiple years if they have opportunities to takeover new pride and mate with available females..

You go from every big coalition, you name it, you will see that they all did the same.

There was video i posted in other thread, a man speaking why usually bigger coalitions are not so successful in raising their offspring then lets say a duo/trio. Because they can easily overtake new pride, leaving their old behind, while smaller coalitions cant do that easily.

I guess my question in all of this, is if females like Ximungwe and Gingerella are not ready to breed, and are still 'mating' with different males, perhaps false estrus set on to keep from being attacked. But since this behavior so clearly happens, why couldn't these larger prides with large numbers of cubs do the same thing to keep their males around? We see it happen with infertile lioness' as well.

The relation between prides and male lions is a strained one. Male lions, especially larger coalitions are a huge drain on the prides resources. So, they are glad when the males make themself scarce for a while. A pride won't do anything to keep the male lions close like begging or offering sex.

So, each times the males go on a patrol or something. The pride is at first relieved and looking forward to not having to share food.
But they still need them for protection. So, if they are away for too long the pride slowly starts to worry about their protection and begin to panics the longer it last. Cumulating in these enthusiastic greetings and grooming when they do return to reinforce the bonds and scent marks that reinforces their relationship.

If they don't, however, by the time the pride realizes they are in trouble it's far too late to beg for them to stay.

"false estrus" is more of a speculation then verifiable fact. We dont know if these females are "pretending" or not.

I personally dont think that "false estrus" exist, because males thru flehmen grimace do know if female is in estrus or not, thru their urine/scent.. Females cant fake that.

I think "false estrus" is another myth..

If its not, as you said, then every females should be able to fake it, which they obiviously dont..
