I believe one of the reasons why these boys are so successful is because they are specialised in hunting hippos. Looking at the manes, which is longer than other wild lions in my opinion, I would think it is due to a hippo rich ketogenic diet.
I'm not sure what a high fat diet would have to do with a larger mane?
Mostly the "mane" differences are from location to location or even from individual to individual between coalition members.
I would also think that any predation on hippo would be a seasonal affair dictated by drought and available water holes, I also think the Notches are still lions and thus will have a wide array of prey items to choose from.
Lastly, I to am impressed by the notches coalition, but their success could have as much to do with a lack of competition as it does to any other factor that plays a role in a lions life.
Edit:
If you scroll through the first few pages you can see that their mane actually is relatively normal, no noticeable belly hair, no hair on their elbows nor far back along their heads, they really seem to have the normal beautiful mane I see in most lions.
