I doubt vets will be called. They only do it when the injury was caused by human intervention.

While that does seem to be the predominant policy in SS and Kruger, it isn't always the case, using Sassy as an example, exceptions do happen. What is less clear is when those exceptions are called upon. 
From what I understand. Its either when humans are endangered, when the reserve itself is endangered, to nullify human activity or when the animal is facing needless suffering where euthanasia would not alter the course of life.
Not sure what happened with Sassy though. Perhaps she was so mentally broken the starved herself beyond the point of return?
@BA0701 Vets weren't called for Sassy, someone just shot her dead.
This is relatively normal in SS, many lions were shot when the reserve thought they were doomed. But to call vets to actually help them, it's only if the injury was caused by a bullet, snare or something like that. When they darted Blondie Avoca thinking he was shot in the head they basically said "well it turns out it was a claw injury but since we're here already messing with the wound lets end the treatment and spray the wound, but his limp is a natural occurrence so he'll have to deal with it himself".
If I recall correctly there was a offical procedure invoked regarding Sassy. Its not like some ranger just decided to shoot her on his or her own descretion.
Though it may have been a case where the vets were able to make the call based on footage and testomony without visiting the animal. In any case, the situation was observed by watchgroups which didnt find any foul play. |
