Regardless, it is some kind of disease, some kind of bacteria or something, as it comes with other health issues, like limping, muscle atrophy, being skinny etc. Theres very long list of lions who had it, that eventually died from those symptoms in their prime years, just to name few, Hip Scar Majingilane (he got name because of it) Sizanani Thanda Impi, Nsuku Bboy, Limper Tumbela, Talamati DeLaporte and many others. But there is some who also have it, but for now still live with it normally, like 2 Mbiri males (although Scar/Zigzag started to show symptoms, like limping and he is not as bulky as he was) , or Snip Tail Mpondo, so i think they have less agressive type. Why do lions get TB after some fight/ wrong buffalo hunt only. For example in human TB occurs due to some bacterial infection in lungs which results into cough and sneeze.
But in lion TB generally occurs when he got injured in some fight/ wrong buffalo hunt, can't get to eat for few days, get very thin/ loss body mass, especially alrind hips and suddenly we came to know he got TB. Also never gotta heard about such TB disease in leopard and cheetah. Forget about these, never heard about TB in lionesses too. I mean there are many 14-15-16 yrs old lionesses aronnd / recently passed like silver eye, her sister, othawa aunt, her sister, 2 old mhangeni girls, old Styx girl, white dot/ black dot Birmingham girls never heard any TB type disease in them. These girls also get injured in territorial fights like tsalala girls vs kambula pride ( a few yrs ago), but they don't get TB. TB in lions is still a study in progress and I'm not all that clued up about it myself. What I do know is that not all lions will become symptomatic and immunity is gradually being built up naturally although this is still nothing immediate. Infected lions can live for years overtly quite healthily but will rapidly lose condition after a trauma hence how it seems to show up after these events. The males typically get first choice in kills and so are the ones eating these lesions. On top of that I think maybe why we don't see females going through the same prolonged decline is that those are symptomatic probably die a lot faster than the males. Blondie could still dominate kills even while skinny which kept him alive for a while, a lioness in the same position would find themselves going without meals.

Hopefully both males had come for food only and girls and cubs are safe. |
