A tiger, which was rescued by the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) staff as a five-month-old cub from a tea estate near Valparai in September last year, was released into a large enclosure on Sunday as part of Tamil Nadu’s first tiger rewilding programme.

The tiger, now aged around 13 months and weighing nearly 120 kg, was shifted from the cage to the open enclosure of 10,000 square feet at Manthirimattam in the core area of the ATR within the Manambolly forest range. The enclosure, with fencing, surveillance cameras and a watch tower, has facilities such as a den and watering hole.
ATR Field Director S. Ramasubramanian said Dr. Ramesh from the Wildlife Institute of India and a team of veterinarians would monitor the developments in the enclosure.
“The future plan is to empower the tiger to hunt on its own and make it ready for jungle life,” he said. The entire rewilding programme was done in accordance with the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

The tiger was released into the open enclosure after it was sheltered in a large cage for around eight months. An injury caused by a porcupine quill when it was rescued in ailing condition was also treated. In the cage, the tiger was given beef, live chicken, rabbit and fresh carcasses of a few wild animals, like deer, that were killed in road accidents.
According to ATR Deputy Field Director M.G. Ganesan, small preys would be released into the enclosure for the tiger to learn hunting after it accustomed itself to the new shelter.
ATR authorities also plan to lure wild animals like deer and wild boar into the enclosure using Boma technique, a method followed in Africa. Manthirimattam is in a shola forest region where animals that tigers normally hunt, such as spotted deer, sambar, mouse deer and wild boar, are abundant.

Veterinarians Vijaya Raghavan of the ATR, Sridhar of Arignar Anna Zoological Park, A. Sukumar of Coimbatore and Manoharan of the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve collected samples and took biometric measurements before the release.

Manambolly forest range officer A. Manikandan and his team will monitor the tiger using the surveillance cameras and ‘machan’ (a raised platform).

barely an year old male cub weighing 120kg is amazing. not exactly a wild cub, semi-wild (if you would call it that). live-baits given considering it’s a cub they are raising with the purpose of setting him free in the wild once he’s fully rewilded.

Hello guys sorry for the ping, I've got a question for you regarding tail length for tigers.

Do you have any information about the longest tail ever measured for both Bengal and siberian tigers and average tail length for both subspecies?

Average tail length is generally 36'' ish
Not sure the longest but i'd guess 42''ish
Always depends on protocol used as well.

Brander mentions his longest tail ever measured was 45'' actually
But also mentions Tail length has little to do with body size. As the two largest Tigers he measured *male and female* both had short tails. Both were from the same forest and the female was most likely the large males mother.

Longest tail for Bengal male is 114 cm, for female is 109 cm. Average is 94 cm for males and 91 cm for females.

Longest tail for Amur male is 111.5 cm, for female is 109 cm. Average is of 99 cm for males and 91 cm for females.

Hey there is a lion named volkel and has a head to body length of 228cm and a totally length of 317cm and chest girth of 148cm and his estimated weight would be around 270kg+, has any tiger reached such a great size and is it reliable

Could you first show your source? Where did you read about this 270kg+ Lion? Do you have any reliable evidence of whether it’s real or not??

Measured in different ways.
Volkel was measured over the curves and in the ALRUP protocol which measures from his gum line, over the lip and nose then across his body.
https://www.ufs.ac.za/docs/librariesprov...r&sfvrsn=0

And Branders male had a 149cm chest girth with a body length of 221cm but measured in a straight line so most likely a bit longer than Volkel as well, probably by 1-2'', his true measurements are also more reliable compared to  Hobatere’s measurements (Volkel) as well which have numerous errors.

Just to give you an idea here is Leo said to be 247cm in HBL or 97'' and 145cm in SH or 57,'' both would be records by a long shot yet this male weighed 213kg and in no way is he close to those measurements.

Hello @GuateGojira, could you tell at which locations were the top 5 heaviest Amur Tiger specimens found? Including the reliable 300kg ones and also the 254kg one.

And in your data about Amurs, you mentioned that you subtracted 20cm to convert over curves to between pegs but don’t you think this might overestimate the length of big Tigers and underestimate the length of smaller Tigers?

Thanks!

Using only scientific records, the biggest chest girth for a tiger is of 154 cm for tiger P-111 from Panna (Kumar, 2022), bigger than any lion in hunting or scientific record (and there is an even bigger tiger, by the way). As @Pckts explained to you, the lions from Hobatere were measured along the curves from the tip of the frontal teeth along every single curve in the body, which greatelly increase the real body dimentions to exagerated levels. In this case, while Volkel (HPL-2) was recorded at 228 cm in head-body, it was probably much less than that, maybe just a little over the 200 cm. About lion HPL-10 "Leo", it was is ridiculously exagerated, check this comparative image of him and the tiger M-102 "Dakre" from Nepal:

Check that the tiger measured 185 cm in head-body "straight" and weighed 200 kg and look bigger than the suppoustly record lion (people on the tiger side were scaled smaller than the man in the lion size, so the difference, in favor of the tiger, could be bigger). The lion "Leo" was recorded as a young adult, just like the tiger "Dakre". Now you can see that those measurements from this lion (247 cm in head-body and 147 cm in shoulder height, as big as a cave "lion") are obviously incorrect. About its weight of 213 kg, that obviously include stomach content, and you can see in its huge belly in the picture, which is about the same (maybe slightly bigger) than that of the tiger, which already include 14-19 kg of meat, and this suggest that the lion had the same amount in its belly.

There is no estimation of weight about "Volkel", no expert has ever estimated that lion at 270 kg, that is for sure, for example Smuts (1980) recorded a maximum chest girth of 139 cm from Rodhesia but its maximum weight was of about 216 kg "not adjusted", so a big chest girth is not guarantee if a huge weight, even when statistically there is a good correlation between them. Other thing, the recorded weights from all the lions at Hobatere are not 100% reliable as they include stomach content, check these images:

Check the huge belly in these specimens, that explain why they recorded weights surpass the regular ranges in other areas of Southern Africa.

Yes I can. But there is no male of 300 kg acepted as "reliable" in the Amur region.

1. 254 kg - Trans-Amur region.
2. 250 kg "evicerated" (could be c.270 kg "intact") - No location specified.
3. 249.5 kg - Bikin, Ussuri region.
4. 227 kg - North Kirin, Manchuria.
5. 224 kg - Manchuria.

There is the case of the male of 325 kg reported from Kirin province (northeast China) that is still in doubt. The problem is that Slagth et al. (2005) found that record from a French translation (1938) of the original document (1929), and when they checked and English translation (1936) they found that the weight was not mentioned there. So, as they could not found the original document from Baikov of 1929 (the one that was used by Heptner & Sludskii), they leave it as "unreliable".

The correction of 20 cm was proposed by Mazák and is only for the biggest males. If you check in my old tables from 2015 (which needs an update, by the way), only two males were corrected and both were over 325 cm, and both males were not included in the average figure. No other male was adjusted in my tables.
