Risky for the mothers to leave the cubs for so long, they have enough numbers to have always at least one lioness babysitting:

Older cubs are probably close to 1yo now, if not already.

Both PCM and females doing a wonderful job, I just wish the females would always keep a babysitter with the cubs 24/7.

Yeah. I agree. It’s puzzling. It’s not the first time either.

Yeah.   I agree.  It’s puzzling.    It’s not the first time either.

Didn't they lose some of OM's cubs doing the same sort of thing?

I dont think its that odd of behavoir. Its not like these cubs are just a few months old. They should know by now how to gend for themselves for a few days.

The Mangheni got wrongfully blamed for losing OMs cubs even though he should get the blame for that. But so far I am not seeing anything of the whole Mangheni are bad mothers thing.

I would lean towards the constant movement all over the region while avoiding the other males as more of a reason they lost most of OM cubs.

Serious question, not trying to be a smart ass, but since the PCM (who are still alive, of course, unlike OM when that happened) are currently juggling at least three prides, possibly 4 if what we are hearing about Tsalala is true, and with their constant back and forth between them all, if any of those prides lose cubs is it the PCM's fault too?

I think it's definitely "odd" that they can't afford a single babysitter, being 5 lionesses.

3 days for cubs below 1yo is a lot. All you need is a hyena, leopard or another lioness to show up and all is lost.

They could even afford 2 babysitters. 1 to run with the cubs if necessary while the other distracts whatever threats arrives. Meanwhile the 3 other lionesses would be hunting.

These cubs as of right now have no chances of outrunning or defending themselves against anything.

Lions cant communicate like this.

When they go hunting, they go hunting.

It depends on the circumstances. But if they suddenly were to leave western sector to go mating somewhere and for some reason or another failed to return. Their absence allowing the various nomadic coalitions in Londolozi to settle in singita and forcing the Mangheni into a more nomadic lifestyle. Then yes.

Stability is very important for a pride and male lions are crucial for that. So their mistakes can have dire consequences to a pride, regardless of how good of a parents the lionesses are. Which is why I feel the Mangheni are blamed unfairly for the cubs death.

I agree with that comment entirely. Sadly, given what we know to this point, if opportunity presents itself, male lions are going to roam the moment females in their current pride are no longer receptive. PCM have left the Mangheni for extended periods, and I don't recall the last time they hung with their cubs with the Nkuhumas. For quite some time, strangely enough, the pride that they seemed to spend the most time with seemed to be the Ximungwes, the one pride with the least opportunity for mating.

I wish it was natural for male lions to be more like the Ross Males, because of that very stability that is so necessary for the cub's well being, and even they wandered to the Breakways, though the Birmingham Pride did have large numbers of lionesses, and like with the Kambulas, there is enough lionesses to keep two males occupied fairly well.

Point I am making is just that I am not sure we can blame male lions for the loss of cubs, when they are only doing what seems to come natural to them, especially when it comes as the result of their own demise. There are a lot of things in the lion world that I, personally, wish happened differently, and OM's final night on Earth is one of the ones at the very top of that list. While there are many lions who are not very good fathers, in the treatment of their cubs, there are many others who are the exact opposite, and are wonderful fathers, and I believe he was one of those as well. I also believe the PCM are wonderful fathers as well, though they might be away longer than many of us would like, due to their responsibilities elsewhere, when they are present they treat their cubs very well, and always seem really tolerant.

@Tr1x24 Such behaviour has been witnessed multiple times, of one or more females babysitting while the others would go hunt.

We've also witnessed an arguably more complex strategy where one/some females run with the cubs while the rest of the pride confront rival lions.
