Tanda Tula update
The six young male breakaways from the Birmingham pride are still around all the time at the moment and are no doubt keeping the dominant males of the Mayanbula pride on their toes. A few days ago, these young males managed to take down and kill a fully grown buffalo bull in the night. This is a very impressive meal to obtain as buffalo bulls are one of the most dangerous animals to take on with their massive size, immense strength and short temper. Luckily, because this is such a large kill, we still managed to see one of the young males feeding on the carcass later on that afternoon.

This is one of the two Mashungulu males who are in the process of taking over the Takazile pride resident in the Western zone of OWNR having already taken over the Takazile split away pride in the Eastern zone . On Saturday they killed and ate another one of the Takazile males. This photo is one of them taking a rest from the lion kill. Since our last post on their first kill and consumption we have been avidly researching this cannibalism. The majority of the bush legends in these parts had no prior to offer. However more digging has found articles that document whilst uncommon , this is not unique. Apparently the Mapogo coalition, subject of the extraordinary documentary “Brothers in Blood” , also behaved similarly with some of their kills. The theory is that it is an illustration of dominance in the extreme, using another food source and thereby denying competition ie hyenas a free meal in the process. It is not “unnatural “nor “deviant” behaviour. One thing everyone is agreed upon is that there is more of this to come….

I like this ranger. He's given insightful commentary in every video I've seen him in. A couple of the Mayambula girls feeding on a baby giraffe around the 5 minute mark. I think he says they're two of the younger females. One of their sisters is denning nearby, but not shown in the video. Apparently the rest of the pride had moved into Kruger with the Skorro Males
UPDATE: Tonight the 6 Birmingham males have found their voice. Yesterday morning their tracks crossed into the klaserie and we assumed that they would continue along with their nomadic lifestyle but this morning they were BACK just north of Kings Camp. This evening, as the sun dipped and night fell, the roars of 6 young males thundered across the timbavati as they moved south and drank at the Waterhole infront of Kings Camp. The Mayambula females and cubs along with Rhasa (Skorro male) were seen about 4km from the Birminghams location and so they will definitely be hearing their roars echo through the night air.

Lets hope for no blood between them, it would be shame for Skorro males to get ousted now (or even worse, killed) when they finally settled with big pride and territory. 3 out of 6 Birmingham Breakaway's are still relatively young, so if Skorros need to do some action to scare/chase them out, they need to do it now, time plays in favor for Birmingham Breakaway's, but its hard and risky to attack 6 males in a 2vs6, even if they are young and inexperienced. You're right about such risk. That is what I meant when DM submitted to the young Nkuhumas back in July.
