The River Pride had been moving erratically in the eastern and south-eastern portions of the concession and had crossed off both our eastern and southern boundaries during this period, but thankfully the core of their present activity remained within the eastern portions of Tanda Tula, and after a couple of days absence their tracks could once more be seen littering the roads. When they returned from one slightly longer-than-normal absence, the mother of the little cubs was showing signs of having been in a serious fight and her back was full of bite marks. As we know of no other lion pride activity to the eastern boundary with the Kruger Park, I can only assume that the bites were inflicted by hyenas. Fortunately, the wounds were all superficial and the mom – as well as the cubs – were generally in good shape. Morning concerning though, there was no sign of the oldest lioness during the course of the week, and we fear that we may not see her again. The Nharhu males were very active and patrolling the extended area of the pride’s territory, one morning this brought them into contact with two members of the Sark breakaway pride. The two lions had killed a big male warthog, but the hyena activity surrounding the kill brought in the Nharhu males to investigate and they promptly set about chasing the Sark breakways from the area. Fortunately, they didn’t come into contact with the small pride, and the two members managed to escape back to the west none the worse for wear.

I must admit i was the one who believed that Ross males sired them, but as they grown and developed mane, im more certaint that Avoca/Giraffes sired them..no resemblances with Ross males whatsoever:

So Avoca/Giraffes and Ross males doesnt have the same fathers it looks like..
The remaining Monwana male seen last month at Walkers River Camp with three females and one younger male. Since the death of his brother, the sighting of the Monwana male is limited. Let's hope he is well and safe.

Has there been any comment on what actually happened to his brother? I know it took some time before his remains were even positively identified, but never heard any speculation as to what happened to him.

Most likely killed by Hercules/Sumatra (althrough no evidence) because those 2 where seen entering their territory just before that happened, and seen with members of Giraffe pride soon after carcass was found..

Ok, thank you my friend. Those two seem to be spending some time apart recently as well. Quite the story Hercules and Sumatra have, they went from losing their previous pride, and suddenly go around taking more prides for themselves. Of the 2 Monwanas, the one who was killed was precisely the one I would have expected to be the last one of their coalition standing.

That could have been a coincidance same as it was for example when Tintswalo males took territory from the Opren males or when Southern Avocas took over from Matshapiris or when Mapozas took over from Trilogy or when Black Dam male took over from Mapozas and so on. In general power vacum in the male lions world do not remain for long. Sumatra and Hercules could have been just in the right place and right time to take advantage from Monwana male demise. Causes of Monwana male demise is unknown.

Two of the three River pride males at Ingwelala (Chad Cocking identified them for Ingwelala photographer Esmareth Knight).
