Tsalala Young female mating with BBoys recently
Shortly after leaving the Lodge we found a lone lioness. She was walking around hither and thither, contact calling all the time, trying to locate her pride. We thought it could be the female that was mating recently and having separated from the male she was trying to rejoin her pride. We followed her as she called and called, going here, then changing direction, trying this way, then that. Eventually she went to stand on a small termite mound where called for several minutes. Again and again she called. Suddenly she dashed off to a bush about five meters from the mound where she grabbed a baby impala. She had spotted the little animal while calling and was not going to miss the chance of a quick meal. Lions are truly opportunistic hunters. She took her kill to a thicket where she lay down to consume her meal. When she completed her meal the big cat resumed her quest to find her pride. MALAMALA TODAY: November 23rd-25th. 24 lions: The Kambula pride and 2 Avoca males were found with a buffalo kill near KK Crossing. Another young male lion(young Sand River male) approached the area and had a brief standoff with the Avoca males before the scar-nosed Manyeleti male came barging in and chased them off. We’ve enjoyed 4 sightings of the Gowrie males over the last 2 days. All 13 members of the Styx pride have spent the last 2 days between Tslebe Rocks and Matshapiri Dam.

The battle between lions and buffalo continued this morning, this time the Othawa pride attempted to kill a buffalo bull. During the initial attempt the buffalo looked totally overpowered but dogged determination and fair amount of adrenaline gave the buffalo a second wind and he was able to shake all four lions. The lions had a second attempt, this time with less verve. MALAMALA TODAY: November 27th & 28th. Lions: It’s been an interesting two days! All 4 Gowrie males, a Manyelethi male, the Matshapiri male and the Kambula pride are in the heart of our reserve. 4 Kambula lionesses were with the Matshapiri male yesterday evening. Shortly after we found them the scar-nosed Manyelethi male came charging in and they all scattered. A long chase ensued but the Matshapiri male managed to escape. 2 of the Gowrie males and a Kambula lioness were feeding on a giraffe kill yesterday morning near the White Cloth- a 3rd male joined them overnight and the 4th male was seen a few hundred meters north of them. The aforementioned lionesses left the Gowrie males this afternoon- she walked less than a kilometer before joining up with the Matshapiri male north of Piccadilly Crossing. The other 4 Kambula lionesses spent the day with the scar-nosed Manyelethi male just east of Rattray’s Camp. The Styx pride were seen in the north and the 2 Avoca males were viewed in Toulon.
