MALAMALA TODAY: September 20th. 2 lion sightings: The Eyrefield pride have recently gone through a dark and tragic period of uncertainty with the loss of their territory and the untimely deaths of pride members (1 lioness and 4 cubs). However, it appears as though the 2 remaining lionesses have taken the first steps towards ensuring the survival of one of our longest serving prides- they were viewed in the company of 3 of the formidable Mantimahle males.

The Mhangene pride, consisting of 16 members made a few excursions west, and treated us to some fantastic sightings!

What is exciting is that it seems the Ximungwe females are becoming more confident by the day. They do not seem to be sticking to the edge of the reserve as much as they used to, and are moving into the central parts more regularly. They have not met up with the Majingilane males that we know of yet. This will be indicative of their confidence levels if, and when, it happens.

Sadly the Ottawa pride has lost the two younger cubs, and is back to four. The two adult females are still accompanied by the sub-adult male and female. They are getting close to adulthood, and it is becoming more and more likely that they will survive a take over from new males. But that does not seem to be happening anytime soon, and the females were already mating with the Majingilane coalition. If a litter comes of this, it is extremely unlikely that they will survive however, as the Majingilane males are almost certain not to last long enough to protect them.

The incredible Mhangene pride are still around... This morning they finished off a sub-adult buffalo, before moving onto a termite mound. Some hyena caught their attention, allowing me the opportunity to get this photo on a cloudy day!

Difficult to know, but I would say it's between some of the Birmingham males or the Mantimahle males.

Yes, and he has a young partner. I think they were last seen to the north of the sabi sands.

Thanks for the response, is Junior the son of the northern or the southern matimbas?

Those 9 magheni males will be a fore to be reckoned with I mean if they stick together no coalition will be able to take them down.
