Lions never go after faces but rather the backs. Only when defending themselves they attack the face.
But thats more because they need to hit something to stop an attack. Not to win.

That RRM was mostly attacked in the back but attacking faces himself shows he was largely on the losing end of the fight.

I don't think established lone lions form coalitions like that easily. So it likely wont happen.

Running off two young pride males would be difficult at best for a single male lion. If all three were there...

I think RRM has been thinking about this for awhile and is why he took the Nharu pride down south near Sabi Sands in late January.

So, why in the world did he go over to TB territory recently and lay around?  Maybe he wanted to see if they would do anything about it.
I think he's still thinking about all this.

Well, if Red Road gets forced to run and can't stay put, he can't go west due to fence (hopefully), north is less likely as Tintswalos (if it is them who oust him) would come more or less fro, that direction, on theo ther hand, he knows parts of Manyeleti north of him and might sneak past to north - so that would leave east, which is Kruger propers so hard to tell what would await him there and news would be more scarce for sure and south, that would mean some parts of Sabi Sands, at least temporarily.

If he gets into Sabi Sand then male wise might find a colaition parner but there is no obvious one, but as Black Dam young males got there all the way from Timbavati all of a sudden, we can't really rule out anyone just due to sitance and lesser likeness of meeting each other.

Nkuhuma has a history of attracting non-dominant males, but also becoming his coalition partner seems to be a risky business, so far he survived two, both of them in quite an odd manner (Mhangeni Big Boy and this year his half-brtoher/cousin Styx). Besides them he met Plain Camp males (which seemed receptive to sticking together, but Nwalungus wanted none of that) and recently Black Dam males. Nowadays he might be willing to join forces with another male but it depends on when exactly would that male, Red Road or another find him, he might start behaving like a Mhangeni pride dominant male and friendly encouter could be out of question. That being said Nkuhuma being sole male might be a target for an attempted takeover, depending on the condition Red Road would be in. But Mhangenis will likely avoid him in frist place - which could make any unlikely coalition of the two even more trickier.

Plain Camp males if he would be nomadic in Sabi Sands just few months ago, might be a great option for him, although his bond with them would never be the same as between the two, but they seemed open to joining forces with others back then. Now, they grew in strenght and confidence, have their sight on females, already killed a sub-adult, they are not pride males and might be still moving around weighting their next steps, but they don't seem like they need a help urgently and already kind of control a territory. Red Road would have to run into them without any female nearby that is for sure, to avoid outright hostile welcome.

Torchwood is gone, Styx is gone, no partnerless young males are about to be kicked out any time soon, there would have to be a takeover for him to have more non-dominant males available as potential partners or new male(s) would have to wander in, happens all the time. Reminds me there was unidentified young male sighted multiple time sneaking around the fence like in March/April this year, I guess that one is far gone one was or another, not seen again? Perhaps someone from Mluwati could wander in.

Red Road could potentially find Tsalalas or Ximhungwe(s) and stick to them, avoiding Plain Camps, Avocas or Tumbela depending on the location. It might be interesting what would happen if he would run into his western sector brothers, especially Limper alone (looking for Ximhungwes perhaps, that seemed to be his solo thing) - healthy I would say Red Road would be obvious as physically stronger, but might not know how many of Tumbelas are there yet, if they would find each other on a big carcass wither of the two might chase the other one or they would tolerate each other to some extent.

Hopefully, nothing like that happen anytime soon, the more time the Nharu cubs will get, the better their chances. And more importantly no snare and local communites would be involved in whatever the outcome will be in Manyeleti. If Red Road sticks around for a while, Talamati or Birmingham (white) boys might come around influences things as well as young nomadic coalitions from further away.

RED ROAD MALE LION update: RRM is starting to look good. It has been a rough few weeks for our beloved RRM but it looks like he is pulling through and staying with his pride. The Nharu pride continues to feed well and be a very successful pride of lions.

Dont think its gona happened, unless 2 of them become nomadic, and even then DM will prob retreat to his brothers.

That's what I meant, if they end up losing their current territories and prides.

Lone males often prefer it that way. Especially now they know they can have success on their own. Its typically more the younger inexperienced males that form coalitions or those that have spend their entire lives in ones and suddenly lost everyone. So him forming a new coalition is not likely. Especially since there aren't many viable candidates.

But perhaps we should focus on the now first. He is not ousted yet. And if he does, he may not be in a shape to be thinking about anything other than direct survival.

Nomadic males always prefere to join up with at least one other male to form a coalition, no matter of age.

RED ROAD UPDATE! Hi Everyone. From what we have seen it looks like Red Road's  condition is improving and the females are no longer aggressive towards him, which means (we hope) they have accepted him back into the pride. We have a few photos, and the full episode is coming up soon.

I read on Weighs and Measurements of lions thread that RRM weighed 210  kilograms with empty belly. This might even be bigger than Scar Mbiri, who himself is a huge male.

Acording to one of the Manyeleti guides RRM is not quite as large as Scar Mbiri. Also to be more precise Tintswalo stated RRM was in between 200 to 210 on empty belly.
