There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Well, the choice will be done for her by the best lion, like I said, the lions are the ones that choose, she gets along with it. In the case you mention, she will go with the physically dominant male.

Later on, she will look for the darker maned male anyway, but a physically more dominant lion is impossible to ignore.

I only think this cub is mud-encrusted...

Both things I would say. Remember they love to stick head in when they're eating.

But nah, why would he be biting him? He's just pretending it bothers him, and the cub is rubbing on his father anyway.

I always say it and I repeat it. Lions are very good fathers, when it's feeding time, they take better care of the tiny cuibs even better than their mothers. They let the little ones feed of their kill, chasing away the lionesses who would eat it all themselves and leave little or nothing for the cubs.

This lion has the normal father's reaction who sees his mud-encrusted son rubbing on him.

And yes male lions are very good fathers. Thousand matings are necessary to have a litter with any female, cubs are  precious and represent the future of the pride, thus male lions must be good fathers.
