I'm sure were all aware that the largest American Lions were absolute giants, but how large were typical sized specimens? Has any kind of average been calculated?

Based on what? Claims like that should have some back up. What study gives that kind of weight and are you suggesting that as average weight or biggest possible based on some hypothesis. You are a new member and you have made now quite many vague postings making confident looking claims with no back up at all.

I can write: "American lion is around 250 kg in weight". But what does it tell to anyone if no idea to what it´s based on and what I try to say? If you make exact claims, give some good reasoning in future, idea of this forum is to share information. If you just speculate, then say it frankly and to what your speculations are based on.

That site looks to have outdated and controversial information. Used sources seem to be wikipedia which isn´t reliable source for anything just like that. Other source was some site for kids, so neither source wasn´t something what could be considered too reliable.

So that up to 420 kg is one estimation among others and not looking to be latest information. So when you wrote, that American lion would weight 420 kg, it was just one vague claim/guess, not something what could be called just like that as objective truth.

In such cases it would be better to say something like: "This source gives estimation up to 420 kg". Not "American lion weight is around 420 kg" because that latter is basically misinformation, if nothing to back it up. We here aren´t recognized experts and same is with you. So we can´t write just like that, that some animal is this big like our word would be the only one with undeniable authority. People like Schaller, Jhala, Karanth, Troyer and some other well known biologists and field researchers have such authority, that they can give pretty confident opinions, because they have done long careers and a lot of field research etc.

I gave criticism now, because you have posted some one sentence postings, like you would know without a doubt some things so good, that you can give some exact figures. While obviously you haven´t known so much about the subject in reality. This can feel harsh, but if you post here, you need to do better. One sentence about some controversial issue isn´t enough when making claims.
